How can I make my cursor unfrozen?
br flag

I am on Ubuntu 20.04 and my cursor worked fine, then suddenly it wouldn't move nearly every time I booted it. One thing that I found that fixed it was pressing F6 twice, but once the icon that showed you that the touchpad is enabled came up, it stopped working. I did a bunch of research and I can't figure out what is wrong or how to fix it, so I decided to reimage my computer (there was nothing I cared  ...

How to detect tone sequences through the audio input?
pk flag

I would like to take a sound input from a microphone, and detect a two-tone sequence, like is done with old-school pagers for EMS and fire. It is usually 2 1-second tones, in the 100s of Hz range. Each different frequency combination of tones can have different meanings.

When a tone sequence is detected, I would like to be able to perform an action (like send an email, run a script, etc.). I can  ...

Installing Ubuntu on an Asus E410M laptop?
in flag

Does anyone know if it's possible to install Linux on an Asus E410M laptop?

I've tried with an Ubuntu live USB, but I can't figure out how to get it to boot from USB. There's no bios screen during boot, so I can't even get into a menu to check if USB boot support is enabled.

All files on /var/www/ change ownership to www-data. Can it be avoided?

I have different files with different owners, starting from the /var/www/* directory. But once a day they change and appear as owner and group www-data.

I can't see why this happens. How can I disable this automatic change?

If I boot the 20.04.3 image and try it out, I can enable the bcmwl-kernel-source package and get WiFi going, but after installing the full system it now says that the dctrl-tools package is "virtual" and cannot be installed, and that broken packages are held.

I have verified the download and reinstalled the system several times, and each time it says the installation is succesful, but the error d ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
