I have a dual boot Win10/Ubuntu 20.04 system. I rarely use the Windoze side, but have to on occasion. It has become unusable so I need to do a reinstall or reset or something.

But I don't trust Windows to handle the reset and not futz up my Ubuntu partition. So I'd like to clone the Ubuntu partition to an external drive and be able to boot from it just in case Windows screws up the reset and tras ...

How Would You Describe the Reasons Slices Are Used
us flag

Just been paying attention to systemctl status' branching structure. I realized I was making up stories to explain why it looked like that but had no clue of what it meant. I can't find much info on slices.

My story is that they are sliced off into isolation. And add security from reading the wrong address... that they probably constantly use the same virtually sliced addys.

How it started

Since I've installed Ubuntu 20.4 as a dual boot on my machine, I've had connectivity issues . Drivers were working out of the box but what was strange was that every couple of hours I would loose connection and not be able to connect again, until I restart.

But recently it has been happening like every hour, and since I'm working on my computer it's very annoying to restart it every ...

Is it possible to mount a drive without changing the directory owner to root?
mx flag

When I'm mounting a drive it changes both the owner of the directory and the write and read premissions. For some reason chmod command doesn't work, and I can't change it with the UI because of the ownership. Is there a way to mount the drive but keep the ownership? I've used sudo mount to mount it and tried sudo chown and sudo chmod to change ownership and premissions respectively, none of them worked. ...

How can I remove a dependency of a program that clearly doesn't need it?
in flag

Ok so I have my main app, Variety, and then a dependency it's installed with it called ImageMagick. The main problem of this dependency it's that it bugs my default pdf reader so everytime I want to open a pdf it'll open ImageMagick instead and it won't let me change defaults for pdf anymore. So next smart step is to uninstall ImageMagick, but if I do that Variety stops working and I really like that ap ...

Is there a safe way to upgrade boto3 system wide?
br flag

(I'm running Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS)

I make daily use of awscli, which I installed with apt and it works just fine. However the version of boto3 that came with it is very old (1.9.253) by comparison to the most recent version (1.20.3). Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but there appears to be a bug in this version of boto3 that prevents me from writing any scripts that need to use AWS's SSO interfa ...

Unexpected output from ffmpeg in bash script

I'm fairly new to writing bash scripts. I wrote a script with the goal of fixing HEVC encoded MP4 files that are missing the ctts atom. It is based on this script from a Plex forum user. The script accomplishes what I am trying to do, but requires manually checking every file and running it against the script. I have over 450 movies in my library and I want to be able to run the script once and not ha ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
