How do I exit keyboard navigation mode?
be flag

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 and I've run into a bit of an issue.

I was working on a program I'm writing and I believe I accidentally enabled a keyboard accessibility option. When I try to use my keyboard normally now, the tab key selects different elements of a GUI application and pressing space acts as if I'm clicking the selected element. It's getting rather annoying as I can't use my desktop as I ...

Getting a Black screen when dual booting from a MacBook Pro

I have successfully installed Ubuntu 21.04 on a partition of my SSD. However since the grub install repeatedly failed whilst installing Ubuntu, I told terminal to install Ubuntu without it. And it did except whenever I select my Ubuntu partition while booting up it immediately gives a black screen. How do I maintain permission across reboots for a script to write to `/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness`?
ru flag

I wrote a script that lets me toggle my laptop screen's brightness (I run if from a hotkey bound by xbindkeys),
but it involves writing to /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness.

For now, I've just been making it able to write to that file by doing
sudo chown $USER: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
but that resets after every time I reboot the laptop,
so I need to rerun it before I can ...

I recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 on my new Asus ZenBook 14 UM433IQ-A5024. This is not my first time using Ubuntu but I am a relative beginner.

The problem: After being suspended, the laptop has some trouble to start again. The light on the ON switch keeps blinking, but the laptop takes a while to wake up. After starting again the background light of the keyboard does not work and the light on th ...

Ubuntu 20.04 is freezing every login, what can I do to diagnose?

The hardware all passes the dell diagnostics and the SMART check on the hard disk.

The laptop is freezing randomly, sometimes at the disk decryption screen, sometimes after 10 minutes of logging in, sometimes at the login screen.

The most bizarre symptom is as follows: If i log in normally, it barely gets past the decryption screen, if it does, it freezes in the first two minutes, like fully freezes ...

The difference between "echo" and "export" an environment variable?

The environment is Ubuntu 18.

If I add one line JAVA_HOME="/usr/java11" in /etc/environment, and execute source /etc/environment , I can echo this environment variable:

But if I try to get it from export, this variable is not in the list:

I need to analyze the IPSec packages from this command in real time:

sudo tshark -i <My_Interface> -Y '(ip.addr == <My_IP>)'

I need to check whether an isakmp package is sent to set a variable as true. I can't wait until the whole sniffing process is finished to be able to read it from a pcap file!

Why doesn't mac laptop screen/logo stay off with `xset`? (ubuntu 20.04)
us flag

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 on a 2013 MacBook Pro.

I configured the lid to stop going to sleep on close.

If I issue this command with the lid closed:

xset -display :0.0 dpms force off

The screen goes off and the logo goes dark, and then the logo comes back on again 1-2 seconds later.

(I actually issue this in a script when the ACPI lid event fires, but I'm trying to debug why it doesn't work first.)

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
