Gnome-shell thinks Thunderbird is still open
pk flag

For some time when I exit Thunderbird the Gnome-shell does not seem to notice.

The dot next to Thunderbird's icon in the launch bar is indicating that the application is still running.

The annoying side effect is that trying to start Thunderbird again can not be done by simply clicking on the icon because (I assume) Gnome-shell focuses that "ghost" window instead.

Live USB of Ubuntu 18.04.2 or later not booting without "acpi=off" or "nolapic"
in flag

I tried to install Ubuntu 20.04 in my desktop but live usb did not boot showing only a blank screen.

Following the instruction below, I found that only when I added acpi=off or nolapic (and nomodeset because of nvidia gpu) to the kernel option, but the PC recognized only a single core of a cpu and the installation failed. Other options (e.g. acpi=ht) did not work.

VirtualBox working... but /sbin/vboxconfig missing?
mx flag

I had an older version of VirtualBox running (6.1.16) and installed VirtualBox 6.1.26 with:

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms

Fired up virtualbox from the command line, and things went OK, but /sbin/vboxconfig does not exist. Is this a one-time/normal thing? VBoxManage exists, which is the important thing, I would think.

Ubuntu 20.04 not recognizing Archer T3U Plus

I'm having issues with recognizing my external Wifi adapter. I used the exact same model of adapter(Archer T3U Plus, AC1300) before and installed the aircrack drivers as directed in this answered question. After installing the drivers and using the sudo modprobe 88XXau command, the green LED lit up and I was able to connect to networks and browse with zero issues. Alarming grub message that has no significant effect - how to get rid of it?
us flag

On a test system today I installed an SSD - this is the first time I've messed about with a PCIe mounted SSD instead of a SATA one.

The test system is a 64 bit UEFI computer, currently it's triple booted with Ubuntu 20.04 on a hard drive, 20.04 on the SSD, and 21.04 on yet another hard drive.

All 3 systems boot and work fine...in the end.

But, when I choose the SSD install of 20.04 from the grub menu,  ...

My Alienware m15 R5 has an overheating problem because the fans are not working.

Here is the output from sudo pwmconfig:

This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)

resolv.conf gets overwritten with bad nameserver on reboot (DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG)

Everytime I reboot my computer, resolv.conf gets:

nameserver 127.0.0.53

When the nameserver is set to this ip, I am unable to ping or access any website (I get the error DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG).

I have to manually change resolve.conf to:

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
