How can a single keystroke create 2 KeyPress events?
ar flag

For no apparent reason, some keys on my keyboard started behaving strange. Most notably on the numpad I would get 2 numbers or a number and a sign with a single keystroke. Used command xev on the terminal and saw that some keys had 2 events for a single keystroke.

Here is an example of the results I got pressing key '9' on numpad.

KeyPress event, serial 37, synthetic NO, window 0x2800001,

Home internet not working with ubuntu

I've wanted to use Linux for a while but whenever I install it the internet doesn't work with my home wifi, it does work with my phone hotspot. I've tried changing some settings in my router and messing with the resolv.conf file (changing the nameserver). In the past I've installed ubuntu on my desktop and had the same issue, I was able to resolve it (I don't remember how to anymore) but after a litt ...

SPAM Notifcations

As of a week or so ago I started receiving what appears to be spam gnome notifications shortly after logging in (within a few minutes but not necessarily immediately). They always appear to be from a site called alison.com. I see nothing relevant in my Ubuntu Settings -> Notifcations specific to this, nor anything in my syslog @ /var/log/syslog. This is the first time I've ever seen anything re ...

Permanently set the maximum number of open file descriptors for a specific user

I'm trying to set a higher maximum number of open files for the user influxdb on a VPS. These are the defaults:

# su - influxdb
# ulimit -Hn

# ulimit -Sn

ulimit -n 10123 works, but doesn't persist after reboot.

I've edited /etc/security/limits.conf, added the two lines below, and rebooted.

influxdb soft nofile 10123
influxdb hard nofile 1048576

After reboot and su - influxdb, ulimi ...

Duel boot error: You need to load the kernel first

I've recently decided to add a HDD to my laptop and have Ubuntu boot of a partition of that drive. It is both for an alternative workspace but also a backup OS if my main nvme corrupts again. If your interested in parts, I'll add a list of my hardware below.

My first attempt at installing Ubuntu was successful. I could boot and shut down the computer fine. after 3 boots however, the computer woul ...

remaping F5 keys with Refresh function...beside Numeric one
pk flag

I bought a 68 keys keyboard that is great, only its Esc-Functions Top keycaps line was not working well. After setting up an xmodmap, pretty much anything got fixed.

Now i have an /.Xmodmap script file that solved most all bugs. The F* keys and Number keys are on the same keycaps so I had to pickup a value for a normal key press. (I do not see a 'Numeric' keycap on this kb)

So I opted for 'Numbers'  ...

I've been interested in passing to Linux for a while, so I dual-booted it with Windows to test it out, been having fun so far.

Does the kernel contain drivers for EVERY device?

I am aware that the kernel does not contain some stuff, like Nvidia drivers or Intel cpu drivers. Those need to be downloaded separately. I get it. What I am asking is, does the kernel keep drivers for all devices that existed even decades ago?

Swapped screenshot shortcuts between file and clipboard not working as intended

How do I install and launch jjazzlab on Ubuntu 20.04?

I just picked up a piece of software called jjazzlab. I'm running Ubuntu 20.04. I can start the software from a terminal window and it runs with no issues, but it never seems to install. What I'm hoping is that there is some way to get it to install so that I can find it with the show applications.

Does this application need to be started from a terminal window or is there another way to launch ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
