laptop still wants HDMI after reboot despite no device connected ! ( ubuntu 20.04 )
sz flag

After I booted with HDMI monitor plugged in, nvidia settings see only one monitor, not two (when plugged in after boot). In such configuration, sometimes it won't wake up after inactivity sleep. And now I see that my laptop won't accept to not have a HDMI screen, even if none plugged in at boot ! ( the laptop screen is still working since grub & the boot sequence appears there ).

Can't escape grub 2 terminal
cn flag

I recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 on my new laptop, dual booted with windows 11. It's an Acer - Aspire 5 A514-54.

I then found out that I need Ubuntu 21.10 to make my wifi card work (see this post). Annoying! So I went into the windows partition and deleted what was in the ubuntu partition, leaving it showing as "unallocated". I loaded the Ubuntu 21 installation on the USB drive (just as I had done  ...

Grub can't find kernel when booting Lubuntu
in flag

I have an old PC I haven't used for about 10 years. It has Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows installed. I wanted to install Lubuntu on it and be able to use grub to choose what to boot into.

I installed Lubuntu 20.04 LTS and installation was fine. I have 3 disks on the PC and Ubuntu and Lubuntu are on /dev/sdc. When I first installed Lubuntu, there was no entry in grub for it. I then ran boot-repair and i ...

How to force chrome to open links in system browser
cn flag

I'm running a 'desktop web app' for Fastmail and for reasons that I can't recall, I could only get this to run in Google Chrome (chromium or FF didn't work).

Unfortunately this means that any links I click in my email open in a new Fastmail app window (a normal tabbed Google Chrome window), instead of opening in my preferred Firefox, which is set as the default browser.

Is there any way around this? ...

Creating a clone of an Ubuntu installation is not recognised as a bootable media
br flag

For a bit of context, I've been dual booting my laptop with Windows 11 / Ubuntu 20.04 no problem for the past 5 months until my laptop got fried. It is a brand new Dell Inspiron 5415 and I believe Ubuntu had something to do with my laptop being rendered useless though the reasons behind my suspicions are irrelevant to my question.

I've taken the included SSD from the fried laptop, put it in an ex ...

Disable touch screen
ht flag

I just installed Ubuntu on an old Dell laptop where Windows 10 was out of service life. This computer is a touch screen. The screen has been cracked for years. Whenever I did a major window upgrade I had to go into device drivers and disable the touch screen and all was fine. How can I do this with Ubuntu? I'm having the old screen issues with Ubuntu. I'm a newbie. Thanks, Dave

Testing TCP Client on Ubuntu VM from Android Mobile on Ethernet

I am developing a TCP Application. My administrator has blocked TCP listening on my Windows PC. So, I am using an Ubuntu 20.04 VM on the virtual box for developing and testing my TCP server application.

I have tested my TCP Application server with the client from localhost. However, I need to test from the actual client system. In my case, it is an embedded system like Android Phone.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
