How to convert subfolder in a directory using ffmpeg in ubuntu
cn flag

I was looking for a code to convert video files in a directory where it has multiple subfolders for each video file. I want to run a batch code so it can convert the video files and save them where the original file was there.

Example:

│   └── movie1.mp4
├── subfolder2
│   └── movie2.mp4

I am new to ubuntu, I am trying to use make to compile code for an assignment, however the make command is not working, and deletes some of the files that are needed for my assignment. The Makefile was provided by my professor, so I am not sure what the issue could be.

This is the message that I get when I run make:

How to source and call a function within another function?
mp flag

To my use case, I'm trying to accomplish calling on a function inside another function sourced from a different script. As you can see below, script1.sh is only called upon and wouldn't work if not called on function_main. Instead, I'm trying to call the functions within it from another script and I believe I'm missing something.

script1.sh:

function_main() {

echo "universe is "

  function_2nd() {

How to open .AppImage file
cn flag

Since installing Ubuntu 20.04, I've had a lot of trouble managing packages. With my most recent attempt to use Flatpak, I lost some apps I had before. To reinstall them, I wanted to start with my password manager (Bitwarden). From the app's webpage, I downloaded, installed, and launched it. When I tried to open it in my Downloads folder, I was told that a .AppImage file can't be opened in the recommende ...

When tlp is enabled ubuntu desktop won't load after installing nvidia-drivers only when on battery
ua flag

So I just installed nvidia-drivers on my laptop, and when connected to AC power it boots fine. But when I try to switch it on on battery, I get a black screen after booting instead of the ubuntu desktop. I can open the tty2 terminal, so I guess something is preventing the nvidia driver from working properly. When I disable tlp it works fine though. So I presume tlp is somehow preventing the driver from  ...

My machine refuses to boot
ua flag

A few days ago my 18.0.4 LTS (I think it is?) started to not boot and instead shows a black screen with lots of text (I'm not at it right now, when I do I will update the post with a screenshot.) This happens on boot so I can't do anything, but it used to happen less rarely while using it.

Is this the end of the line for my machine, and if so, how would I get access to an important file on it via ...

Why is the Trackpoint Experiece on Windows better than Ubuntu?
br flag

I am an Ubuntu user since years but one thing that bothers me daily is the Trackpoint. I have a Lenovo Carbon X1 (8. Gen) and when I dual boot into Windows the Trackpoint feels much more responsive and precise. I can't tell what it is exaclty.

Is there any way to get a similar experience on Ubuntu? Changing the accelaration with xinput helped a little bit.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
