I got this second-hand laptop and it was working fine until I restarted it, and now I'm stuck at this boot message screen. I've googled it and seen people type in codes or something, but when I type it lags. Do you have any ideas how to sort this out?

Yoga 12 weird tabletmode behavior
cn flag

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS with kernel 5.13.0-28-generic. The Lenovo Yoga 12 has a 180 degree foldable display. When folding the screen it changes into what I call tabletmode and the keyboard and touchpad turn automatically off. There is a small led on my 'Fn' key which indicates which mode it is in. When it's on it is in keyboardmode, when it's off it is in tabletmode.

Problem starting up
in flag

I'm by any means no dev or a programmer, I'm just trying to set up a Masternode following instructions. Got myself a VPS and followed these instructions to install a GUI.

However, when the machine was done installing the GUI and I rebooted the system, I can view the startup process with VNC and it always stays here and doesn't start:

Double tap ctrl-q to quit applications
au flag

On MacOS I'm using Karabiner-Elements (https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/) to set up cmd-q so I have to double tap it to quit applications. This prevents quitting applications by mistake when using cmd-w to close windows for example.

So basically I will press and hold cmd and then double tap q.

Is it possible to set up Ubuntu to do the same thing?

Thanks!

My webcams were mysteriously renamed to unhelpful names. How can I fix?
cn flag

I've got two webcams: one of them is built in to my Lenovo T14s (running Ubuntu 20.04.3), and the other is an external USB device. They used to have obvious names: one was called something like "Integrated Camera C" and the other was called something like "HuddleCamHD". Strangely, they have both been renamed to be "Video Capture 4", which means I can't easily distinguish between them when switching came ...

How to mount/recover failed drive?
br flag
Ren

Today my home server went to kernel panic, something went wrong with its system drive. I swapped the drive, restored the server and now I'm trying to figure out what happened to the old one. It actually is quite old, so I guess it will be a hw failure, still I'd like to try to learn something about recovery technics (and find why SMART didn't warn me). I can see the drive as /dev/sdb now, and I can detec ...

Why do Nvidia driver packages upgrade past the major version in their name?
in flag

From Ubuntu package list for nvidia-driver-*, any nvidia driver in the major versions on the left will be effectively upgraded to the major version on the right:

495, 510      -> 510
460, 465, 470 -> 470
455           -> 460

This breaks compatibility if something relies on 495 but is not compatible with 510. An example is A100 GPUs on GCP, which can take 495 but not 510.

Why is it structured li ...

Looking around these forums and elsewhere I find that this is a common issue, however the proposed solutions have not been helpful and thus I ask in hopes that someone might be able to have the right solution.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
