three monitors and mirroring two of them
za flag

My setup is:

  • Dell XPS 15 9500 running Ubuntu 21.10
  • Wacom 13 One attached through hdmi<=>usb-c convertor
  • Beamer connected through second convertor.

The good thing: it works... well, not quite. The three monitors are joined and form a separate part of a very large screen. But i would like to mirror the Wacom screen with the beamer screen so my students can see me make notes during lectures.

i915 randomly picking 60hz or 30hz on Intel HD P630
au flag

On ubuntu 21, and even on the latest dev branch of 22.04, I switched early in hope the issue would be resolved without luck.

Update: I managed to get 60hz all the time by completely unplugging the monitor, letting it boot, and then plugging it in. Apparently it does not like the handshake when linux is starting, for some reason.

VirtualBox VERR_ACCESS_DENIED on Lubuntu 20.04

On booting VM using VirtualBox I sometimes get this error.

Any idea how to prevent it? It seems occurring randomly, and restarting VM - often several times in row - fixes it.

Host computer is running Lubuntu 20.04, guest tries to run Lubuntu 20.04.

Enable usb0 NIC for initramfs
cn flag

I am attempting to USB tether an android phone to a pi. It appears that when I edit the /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init script to insert IP=:::::usb0:dhcp that I am unable to get a dhcp lease on the usb0 interface. I thought that perhaps I need to add the rndis_host kernel module, so I edited /usr/share/initramfs-tools/modules to add the line rndis_host however when I rebuild with mkinitramfs -o /boot/in ...

Ubuntu Budgie: Why is my system tray / app indicator empty?

I recently switched from Kubuntu to Ubuntu Budgie. First I installed Ubuntu Mate (ubuntu-mate-sektop), and a couple of weeks later Ubuntu Budgie (ubuntu-budgie-desktop) on top of that. All installs were done using apt.

So far I really like Budgie: the looks, the speed, the window management possibilities... But there is one major problem: Although I have several apps installed that should show up ...

How does nano determine syntax coloring for a .txt file?
id flag

I've recently discovered, that when I open a new text file (extension .txt) in nano, there is actually a limited syntax coloring:

enter image description here

That is, if a line starts with number sign/hash, it is colored.

I think this is great, and I really like this (for a txt file, I really don't need any other syntax color, but one marking comment, with the same comment syntax as in bash), so I was wondering how/where it w ...

kde 5.24 - overview launch key
ae flag

I just upgraded my KDE Plasma to 5.24 using an ubuntu ppa. I love the overview function. Right now it launches from Meta-W . How do I get it to launch from Meta alone?

When I try to change the key binding I type the Meta key and the settings screen wants another key. It is as if the Meta key were only a Shift key, and cannot be used alone.

Thanks.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
