On a remote server (only access via ssh after booted), I am having troubles after upgrading from 18.04LTS to 20.04.3LTS:

  • system reboot on old rescue kernel:

  • and zfs is not working anymore (so all my lxd containers are away for now...)

    $ uname -r 4.19.62-mod-std-ipv6-64-rescue

$ zpool info The ZFS modules are not loaded. Try running '/sbin/modprobe zfs' as root to load them.

Ubuntu 20.04

Kernel 5.15.13-051513-generic

I am having the following problem, the pop up, pops up quite often. What could it be? I found a "solution" that said to just ignore it, but that solution doesn't leave me very calm. Could someone explain to me why this happens and how to fix it?

How i make Ubuntu 18.04/20.04 use xorg by default instead of xrandr?
fr flag

I want to change the color depth of a Ubuntu VM installed on a server. Lower color depth reduce the bandwidth (smoother screen) when connecting over SPICE-gtk. With xrandr I can't change the color depth to 16 like with Xorg.

I made a xorg.conf in /etc/X11 with the following code:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Virtual-screen"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 16

Is my slow bootup related to dual booting Ubuntu and Windows?
in flag

I just sat down through an +11 minute of bootup! my machine is not old or slow (specs below) but the problem seems to be related to the filesystem, I have Ubuntu 20.04 on HDD and Windows 10 on SSD, I always got slow bootups because every time I boot I have to sit through "filesystem checks" but this time it was insane.

My specs:

Wrong Pulseaudio sink after starting with disabled display
lk flag

I'm running 20.04 as HTPC. Sometimes it happens that the PC wakes by RTC to perform a recording. The AV receiver and the display are powered down in that situation.

When I decide to use the HTPC then and start AVR and display, the wrong Pulseaudio sink is selected. I can fix the issue either by rebooting then or by changing the sink manually using pavucontrol.

What is the proper way to edit files in the /sys filesystem and have them stick
br flag

I was able to get my BlueTooth mouse to stop lagging with the command:

echo 300 > /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb1/1-14/power/autosuspend

However, I believe that this change will be lost upon reboot.

I understand the concept of the /sys directory being an abstraction of the hardware on the computer and by writing to this pretend file I am actually changing some runtime? kernel? parameter.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
