Running an X application from tty
cn flag

I've been trying to run an X application (firefox) on tt3 (CTRL+ALT+F3) with the following command:

 xinit /usr/bin/firefox $* -- :2 vt$XDG_VTNR

and all I've been getting is a blank screen.

Killing the tty from a different tty with pkill reveals this line in the xinit/startx dialogue

xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)

Does anyone have a clue why a) it isn't work ...

Ubuntu 20.04: nvidia-xconfig black screem on boot
br flag

Running nvidia-xconfig to let nvidia create a custom xorg.conf file breaks booting making the screen go black after the kubuntu log it and I can only recover it by deleting the configuration file.

Is there any way I could properly generate the file?

The generated xorg.conf file looks like this:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 470.86

ISC DHCP Server - Assign the same IP without static host config
in flag

Is there a way to configure the DHCP server to assign an IP to a client without the client being statically defined.

My main goal is to create an IP pool that will keep the IPs reserved for 30 days as an example. If there are no requests from the client within these 30 days, the IP will be released again. Otherwise, the one and the same IP should always be assigned beyond these 30 days.

Can't Boot Ubuntu 20.04 after installing it alongside Windows
cn flag

I'm using an ACER Predator G3-710 and just installed my Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 on a second SSD-Card that was previously empty. Everything went fine but after restarting my PC it always boots into windows immediately and won't show the Grub menu. I also can't find Ubuntu in my BIOS Boot settings.

Solved: I had to disable save boot in my BIOS settings and change the bootpath using this article.

What’s the recommended way of mounting with rclone in on Ubuntu Desktop
sg flag

I want to configure an encrypted rclone mount on a Linux desktop system for a backup solution (probably PikaBackup installed via Flatpak) that stores on a cloud storage.

The storage could be mounted on demand (i.e. when PikaBackup tries to access it) or all the time. But it should be user writeable and available without any manual process when the backup process runs.

Therefore I'm curious what kind  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
