How to create ZFS home dirs using pam_exec
pt flag

How do I get pam_exec.so to create a new home dir ZFS dataset for each user who logs in via GDM/LDAP? I'm running Ubuntu 20.04, using GDM and nslcd for LDAP auth.

pam's mkhomedir library doesn't have native support for ZFS yet so I've filed a feature request for this on github. Until that gets implemented, I'll have to hack this together myself.

Device paired/connected, audio not working in 21.10 like maybe many, but

The odd thing is that I have the very same Medion machine here working for more 24 hours or something. This machine to be returned for not working pixels had the same bluetooth problems at start, then I followed some advice in a certain sequence and worked fine. Which folders would you copy and paste?

Not able to do the same with this new one, maybe as the sequence was not the same (who knows).

Increment operator does not work on a variable if variable is set to 0
br flag

Incrementing a variable var works in bash when enclosed in double parentheses like (( var++ )). But I have found that it fails if variable is set to 0 beforehand like var=0.

$ a=0
$ ((a++)) && echo "command succeeded" || echo "command failed"
command failed

$ a=1
$ ((a++)) && echo "command succeeded" || echo "command failed"
command succeeded

Can someone explain this behavior?

Please forgive me if the question was already answered but I didn't find anything completely relevant.

I have a customer who encounters a problem with Ubuntu and RDS workstations. As soon as he accesses the computer remotely, via RDS, the audio configuration is lost. He has to restart the machine to recover a sound card and its configuration for the visios.

Download spreadsheet from Google Docs in command line
ph flag

How can I download a Google spreadsheet from the command line? This is a simple extension of the question: How to convert document from Google Docs to text file But if I specify the format as "export?format=ods" (with "-O file.ods"), the output may be called .ods, but contains only text (.xml code, I believe).

How to find same subfolders in two folders on first level only?
cn flag

Scenario:

  • 2 main folders, that may have subfolders with the same names (I do not know what names might be duplicated, that's what I am trying to find)

  • I only care about duplicate subfolder names on the first level of the two main folders

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
