Connecting to a Windows machine from a separate, Ubuntu machine on my home network
cn flag

I have Windows 10 on one machine and Ubuntu 20.04 on another, completely separate machine. They both connect to the internet through my home network. My Windows machine has no problem at all seeing the Ubuntu machine and can access that machine through shared folders. This is all great; but I would like it to work the other way too.

Permission denied? when I set permissions for a file only for groups , what step am I missing
cn flag

I have set so that only groups can read and write.

I have made a file in /home/alice (Alice is part of red).

Bob is also part of group red.

When I cd into the /home/alice/file1 with Bob, I can see the file.

But I get permission denied when I run: cat file1

Is there a step I am missing to allow groups to read/write. The permissions are good and Alice and Bob are part of the same group.

cn flag

I'm looking for a sowftware where I can speak to the microphone and get the recorgnized text and also a suggested translation in a different format.

The objective is to help people have written online conversations in languages that are not their own.

I saw many speech-to-text projects and also translating apps, but none that seems to combine them for this particular purpose.

Theming gtk3 dialogs
in flag

I am playing with theming Ubuntu 20.04 and 21.10 and have not been able to discover how (or if it is possible) to change the background colors for specific dialogs and their buttons generated by gtk3 applications without changing how the apps themselves are themed. I hope this is possible by making some additions to the css files for my theme.

More specifically, some examples: the Delete dialog  ...

"Loading initial ramdisk" error in Ubuntu
in flag

When I boot up my pc, I face an error -

Loading Linux 5.11.0-27-generic ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

And it takes very long time. After it gets over, it will either drop me to the initramfs shell or will finally boot up (almost once in 10 times). How can I fix this?

(I also can't access the GRUB menu.)

After upgrading from 21.04 to 21.10 I get a blank login screen
us flag

GUI seems to be partially working. I get a clock, accessibility and power settings, but rest of the screen is just solid purple colour, no user to select no field to enter my password so that I can actually login.

I have checked if I can get terminal access with ctrl + alt + F1-F8 but I had no luck with that.

I have tried also tried reinstalling gdm3 from root console in recovery mode, but that didn ...

Problem with installing CUDA Toolkit on Ubuntu 21.10
cn flag

I successfully installed CUDA Toolkit by following the process mentioned on the official site. But during installation, it also upgrades the Nvidia drivers. Currently nvidia-driver-390 is working but after CUDA Toolkit installation it upgrades and those new drivers don't work. In Ubuntu 21.04, it was fine but now it's not working anymore. I have Quadro K1100M GPU in laptop.

Nginx and a per server's user setting
cn flag

On my local dev machine, I'd like to run an nginx server with several websites, each of them running with a different user that can be either used to run the process and/or at least used to impersonate the user with which files/folders are accessed.

My understanding is that the user setting is located in the /etc/nginx/nginx.conf file and cannot be nested under the server block of the sites confi ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
