Why is my system not installing newest kernel (linux-image-5.4.0-84-generic)?
uz flag

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS x86_64 and I've been trying to install the newest version of the kernel using:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

But by the end of the run it always shows the following message:

Thunar doesn't recognize SD cards

I use Ubuntu Studio 20.04.3 LTS inside two desktop PCs and one laptop, all of them are 64 bit systems.

Inside one of my desktop PCs, I have a Multi-Card Reader USB 2.0.

That device worked so fine all of those years. But, this year, I have tried to use it to read files from my photographic camera SD cards and I cannot to see it with Thunar, or GParted, or any other files manager:

XUbuntu 20.04 won't connect to wired router/internet

XUbuntu 20.04 won't connect to wired router/internet using my computer, the live CD, or live CD for 18.x or 16.x. These had worked before without problem. Other computers running 18.x still work and my desktop still connects using Windows 10 but not when I boot into XUbuntu. I've tried a couple of solutions posted and one worked temporarily but failed to connect on next boot up. Please let me know what  ...

Can't mount drive without using e2fsck every boot
vg flag

If i want to mount this drive, i need to run e2fsck or fsck.ext4 after every boot. All data is visible and accessable after that.

uuid only appears in system listings after "fsck.ext4" or "e2fsck". The uuid appearing after "fsck.ext4" is inside fstab and after "sudo mount -a" it mounts successfully. But next boot i have to do "fsck.ext4" or "e2fsck" and mount again.

fstab entry added by GUI Disks utility seems ill-formatted but works?
lr flag

The Disks utility (gnome-disks) added this entry in /etc/fstab:

UUID=[UUID] [mount pount] auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0

Based on numerous examples and on info fstab, auto is where the filesystem type (ext4 in this case) should be, and then auto,, with a comma, should start the list of options.

But the partition is mounted at startup, so auto is working. Is fstab lax about formatting? Is the D ...

I would like to edit the filemanager sidebar, not the OS sidebar. Ubuntu 20.04

I would like to remove the Music, Video, and Public folders from the default folders that display when you open a folder using filemanager with the sidebar visible. In other words, I have bookmarks that I would like to access with one click but the filemanager window is not tall enough to display them all. nvidia-settings and drivers absolutely broken

Boy is Ubuntu not being nice to me today. I'm sort of a beginner in Linux but I still have basic knowledge and I know what I'm doing most of the time and won't just willy nilly do whatever a guide/tutorial tells me to.

I don't know when this could've happened, but when I installed Minecraft and noticed I was playing on integrated graphics so I checked NVIDIA X Server Settings to see what's up. Hal ...

Can Ubuntu Server 20.04 64-Bit boot from USB device on RPi 3B+?
de flag

It boots for RPi4 from USB device, so I assumed it would also for the RPi3B+. However, I have not had any luck so far. Is there some extra step needed, or do I fundamentally need to boot from SD card and mount the file system separately? (I'm surprised how little comes up when googling this.)

How do we diagnose delays After large number of files are deleted?
cn flag

A runaway program generated a large number (at least a million?) of files into /var/log. Even after deleting all (?) rogue files, any query on the folder/tree now takes about 5 minutes, and can cause the whole system to be sluggish.

The issue was that .gz files created by logrotate were being added to other .gz archives, and those were being archived and ... oops. So all invalid .gz files have be ...

ssh to a remote terminal and bypassing dotrc files
nl flag

I want to rapidly execute a remote command using ssh, for example ls -al /path/to/myfile. Unfortunately, I'm using tcsh rather than bash. My .cshrc file is quite long and slow, so I'd like to bypass it. If I were using bash, I could (presumably) run

ssh simon@192.168.7.179 "bash --noprofile --norc" < lsFile

where lsFile contained the ls command. But tcsh doesn't support either of these flags.  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
