Static wired LAN IP without a DHCP router ("Link-Local Only") on Ubuntu 20.04
cn flag

Disclaimer: I the noobest noob when it comes to networking. I hardly have an idea what means what in a network setup. For me, there is no "trivial" information in this regard.

I have an Ubuntu 20.04 machine and a Raspberry Pi, on my home wired LAN network. In the current setup, the only thing in between these devices is a network switch:

Conditionally stop interactive and non-interactive ssh login and give error message
cn flag

I want to prevent interactive and non-interactive ssh login based on a conditional logic. I need to test the username and give an error message.

People using sftp (non-interactive ssh) should also be subject to the luckness test.

How would I implement that? I have full control of the system.

I tried to use sshd ForceCommand, but according to https://stackoverflow.com/a/33714333/746461 it does not work fo ...

Make /etc/resolv.conf changes permanent in WSL 2
in flag

On WSL 2, when I try to connect to a website, I get an issue:

$ ping www.google.com
ping: www.google.com: Temporary failure in name resolution

Now, to fix this, I had to add /etc/wsl.conf with this content:

[network]
generateResolvConf = true

And I need to change my /etc/resolv.conf to:

nameserver 8.8.8.8

This works fine.

However when I restart my system, when I shutdown wsl or do anything simi ...

Disappeared RAID 1 array after replacing motherboard
de flag

I ran into a huge issue. I planned to replace the motherboard in my HTPC, it was assembled but it turned out that my new mb is faulty and I had to put back the old one. My old Ubuntu 20.04.2 is booted, all drives mounted except the RAID 1 ARRAY (sdc and sdd). I figured it out that the new motherboard's UEFI bios probably deleted the superblocks from the raided HDDs. I checked these:

Ubuntu 18.04 console freezes when listing external usb drive directory

The problem appears to occur if I press tab multiple times while listing the external drive directory. Here's an illustration of what has occurred. In Console 1, I was trying to list the contents of a lower directory and pressed tab several times to get the listing of the next directory level. The console froze. If I open a new console and try to list media/john, it freezes. If I open a third cons ...

Ubuntu 21.04 Host - Windows 10 Guest VMWare 16 Workstation Player frequently freezing entire system necessitating hard shutdown

I'm a relatively new convert from Windows; but there are still some applications that I use for work that don't have a straightforward alternative in Linux, e.g. ABBYY Fine Reader and OneNote (the online version and electron Linux version is still no match for the desktop version, which offers more features).

After a trial period, I felt confident enough with Ubuntu that I erased and reformatted  ...

how do you set the /etc/resolve.conf domain on hirsute server?
cn flag

I used to be able to address my old server at "dckr1.local", I setup a new hirsute server and change the /etc/hosts lien to read:

127.0.0.1 dckr1.local dckr1

and added to /etc/resolv.conf

search local
domain local

but can't get it for the life of me to work when I reboot. resolve.conf gets overwritten. Not sure if by something in systemd or something it's calling like cloud.init.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
