Why am I logging in as "kvm" instead of my normal username?
no flag

One day I booted my computer and logged in and my desktop was empty. I was now in /home/kvm/Desktop. I never created this user. All my stuff is still under home/ben, so no data has been lost. kvm however does not have sudo privileges, and I am not sure how to log in as 'ben.'

The only thing I can think of is my cat typed something while I was away.

How do I begin to address this problem?

boot: error: compression algorithm 98 not supported
mp flag

My Ubuntu 21.04 workstation seems to be having a problem after the latest update. Upon rebooting I see "error: compression algorithm 98 not supported" prior to the GRUB boot menu being displayed.

When I installed Ubuntu 20.04 on this system (now upgraded to 21.04) I followed the 'Root on ZFS' instructions listed here: https://openzfs.github.io/openzfs-docs/Getting%20Started/Ubuntu/Ubuntu%2020.04%20Roo ...

Keep systemd service file the same after apt upgrade
mx flag
APD

When updating packages like docker in Ubuntu using apt the systemd file for docker is reset to it’s default.

I have a modification in the systemd file for docker which points the volume to another drive. When I update docker it resets the systemd file to default.

Is there a way when a package is update via apt to keep the modified systemd file the same?

Monitor scaling does not work properly
in flag

I have a laptop and a monitor connected to it. I would like 125% scaling on the lapop and 100% on the monitor. Changing any settings changes the scaling on both monitors. I would like to scale 125% laptop separately. 100% monitor.

Ubuntu 20.04 switched my display size to 1024x768 when it should be 1366x768 and it isnt showing that it has that res available
it flag

I restarted my PC around 30 minutes ago and before it was in 13366x768, which is normal, that's the correct display size for my monitor, but when I restarted it it was stretched and in 1024x768 and when I went to change this in the display settings it only showed that i had 4:3 1024x768 and nothing else. Can anyone help me? I use a NVIDIA GTX 1050 and I'm on Ubuntu 20.04.

Thunar missing icons when launched with remote X11
ve flag

I have a box with Thunar installed which works fine locally but when I launch Thunar from a remote ssh session (with the -Y flag), it seems to start and work fine but it's missing some of the icons, namely the directory and file icons would be helpful to see: screen capture of Thunar with missing icons.

Any hint of what package I might be missing?

Broken animation for applications overview
mu flag

When I press the application launcher, the icons flicker in their post-animation locations, and then the app menu animation starts.

The flicker is unwanted and I want to know how to get rid of it.

I've tried multiple screen recorders to give a visual demonstration, but much to my annoyance, they do not display the flicker (60fps playback)

Ubuntu 20.04LTS - Cannot resize NTFS partition

Recently while trying to install Ubuntu 20.04LTS on dual boot with Windows, I encountered some weird behavior regarding 'Gparted' and the built-in 'Disks' apps. Initially, the Ubuntu installer didn't pick up any of my drives during Live CD. I then rebooted into Live CD, however this time only my primary drive was detected. The installer detected Windows on it and I proceeded to have it install onto that ...

I'm always updating the kernel when a new version is available. So far that has never been a problem, but the latest version, 5.11.0.22, simply won't boot on my HP Pavilion! When starting, the Grub menu is shown, and if I select Ubuntu the HP logo displays briefly, then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. Using 18.04.5 LTS, and very new to this.

I was copying rather large files (800+ images) when Nautilus froze so bad that I couldn't access the GNOME terminal using keyboard shortcuts. PXE Boot / Live CD root partition size

we use a remix'd ubuntu ISO to PXE boot machines and since switching to a 20.04 based one, the amount of free space on the root partition after boot is not a lot, significantly less than the amount of ram in the system. (less than 1GB) The boot environment mimics that of the Live CD, i would've thought it would use half the ram as writeable disk space like the live cd normally does. Does anyone know how ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
