PXE Boot / Live CD root partition size
cn flag

we use a remix'd ubuntu ISO to PXE boot machines and since switching to a 20.04 based one, the amount of free space on the root partition after boot is not a lot, significantly less than the amount of ram in the system. (less than 1GB) The boot environment mimics that of the Live CD, i would've thought it would use half the ram as writeable disk space like the live cd normally does. Does anyone know how ...

Transmission advertising IPv6 address despite not being bound to it
ng flag

I am using Ubuntu 20.04.2 and transmission-daemon 2.94-2ubuntu3. Transmission is connected to a VPN over IPv4, and that works fine, except that — despite passing --bind-address-ipv6 fe80:: to transmission-daemon — Transmission is somehow still advertising my IPv6 address. I can tell via a Torrent IP checker and also by the fact that my web server has recently been getting /announce requests  ...

Upgrade Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to 20.04.02 on a Dell 7530 now most attached devices are not working: sound, usb camera, headset, wi-fi adapter not found
cn flag

I recently performed a planned upgrade of 20.04 LTS to 20.04.02 and subsequently lost most of the device drivers (I assume) - no sound (just says 'dummy output'), no usb camera, USB keyboard doesn't work, no usb headset and no wi-fi adapter found. (they were working previously of course).

If I goto software updater it says I'm fully up to date!

If I run lusb I can see:

How to restore "View split on right (or left)" feature
ar flag

Until this morning, in Unity, I had been happily using Ctrl + Super + RightArrow (or LeftArrow) to place a window neatly on one half of my screen or the other. I'd also sometimes use the mouse to drag a window right or left, until the pointer touched the edge of the screen, and that would have the same effect.

This morning, both techniques stopped working, and the associated shortcuts disappeared ...

gnome-maps fails to launch in Ubuntu 20.04

Recently (within the past few weeks) gnome-maps fails to launch in Ubuntu 20.04. It used to work. My only change has been installing updates from Canonical as they are released.

When launching I get the following warnings (and a few more):

This is a strange one. I'm running Ubuntu 20.04, and freshclam doesn't seem to like it when you try to point it at any config file other than what is default.

How do I make sure I'm utilizing all of my hard drive?
cn flag

I installed Ubuntu Server 20.04 on an old PC of mine which has a Terabyte of storage on its hard drive. I planned to make this into a home media server, but I'm concerned about my disk space. I believe I chose LVM partitioning by accident when I installed, so my sudo df -h shows /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-ubuntu--lv as my main partition mounted on "/".

Cursor Glitch Ubuntu 21.04

I installed Ubuntu 21.01 as dual boot with Windows 10 two weeks ago. Except that there is some sort of square/rectangle around my mouse that "draws" over anything behind it and follows the cursor around.I tried sudo service gdm, but it isn't working at all. Does anyone know of a permanent solution to this?

Is MPRIS user specific?
lr flag

I'm trying to setup spotifyd on my system currently and it has a mpris interface.

I am however running it as a systemd service and as another user (spotifyd), and I can't seem to control it using playerctl (The relevant module is enabled: use_mpris = true).

Hence my only thought is whether dbus is separated across user namespaces. Is this correct?

Ubuntu Device Control
in flag

I work on the security team and we are trying to lock down our systems. We are looking for a technical solution to lock down media burning, USB blocking etc. I found USBdeview but that only allows me to block a thumb drive once it is used. Is there anything open source or COTS that I can try and use in our environments? We are heavily Debian flavored. Thank you!

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
