gnome-screenshot is not working and fails 90% of the time
es flag

When using keyboard shortcuts, or typing gnome-screenshot into terminal, it only works about 10% of the time. When using -a to select the area, the area selector cursor + appears, but after selecting an area, no file is created, no shutter sound goes off. If I press UP in terminal to repeat the command and keep selecting screen areas, about one time in ten, I get the shutter sound, and the screens ...

MySQL Cannot Connect Using Client

After removing, purging and reinstalling MySQL due to a mis-install which got it stuck in a state where it would neither uninstall nor install, it is no longer accessible from MySQL clients but runs from the command line. Webmin seems able to access it and shows proper users and accesses but no desktop client will open it.

Linux KDE SSD ERROR “SMART firmware is not reporting a failure, but there are early signs of malfunction”

After upgrading my Linux KDE system to plasma 5.22, SMART Status gave me this warning:

SSD 256GB (/dev/sda) The SMART firmware is not reporting a failure, but there are early signs of malfunction. This might not point at imminent device failure but requires longer term analysis. Back up your data and contact the manufacturer of the disk, or replace it preemptively just to be save.

Wired connection works for a while after fresh install then stops
mh flag

Have an unused laptop that I want to run Ubuntu on (and leave in a corner to run various scripts). I installed Ubuntu Desktop and a wired connection worked for a while then just stopped working (wifi works). I re-did a fresh install and it works for a while then stops working. There is nothing wrong with the cable or connection; I tried two different ethernet cables on two different laptops as well, the ...

Desktop startup takes long time occasionally
es flag

It takes long time to get Xfce desktop after giving login credentials in Xubuntu 20.04 occasionally. Normally it takes only few seconds, but sometimes it takes maybe half minute or so. During that time LightDM screen is shown, and there seems to be a lot of mass storage activity. Why does it take long time sometimes?

Clip from /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log shows the delay:

how can I increase the terminal text size on ubuntu server?

I am logged into an ubuntu server, the only monitor available is an old tv. The terminal text is very small, if I didn't know what it was saying, it would basically be illegible. In the terminal, (not the terminal emulator) how can I increase the text size?

I tried dpkg-reconfigure console-setup and changed the font to fixed, and the size to 8x18, the largest available, but it looks terrible, its even h ...

My system is as follows:

RTX 2080TI with 3 DisplayPorts, 1 HDMI port, and 1 USB C port (DisplayLink). Plenty of ram and an AMD Ryzen 9. I have 3 non-problem QHD monitors plugged in via 2 displayports and an HDMI.

On Windows 10, the problem monitor works fine at 4k/60FPS using either the USB C or a DisplayPort. By itself, or with my 3 other monitors.

Is there a .NET Core package in Ubuntu's main or universe repos?
fr flag

I know of .NET Core / .NET 5 official Microsoft snaps and debs.
However, I believe OSS snaps aren't necessarily compiled as reproducible builds.
If I'm not mistaken, the publisher provides the already-compiled snap package, so it's not compiled by the Ubuntu Team, right? And the same goes for custom APT sources. So I don't think the official packages are verifiably reproducible from source (please c ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
