Upgrading a server vs fresh install
ru flag

I have an old VM which some years ago I upgraded from Ubuntu 14 LTS to 16. Now I've upgraded it to 18. My question is, can I assume that this installation is almost 100% identical to a freshly installed Ubuntu 18 LTS regarding the distribution, kernel, configurations etc?

In other words, should I be upgrading servers or should I be rebuilding fresh ones?

Is there a way call an alias without separating it from previous characters?
tr flag

Super new to all of this. Trying to do the overthewire wargames to learn and thought it was a bit tedious to log in to each level, and wanted to make some shortcuts. I made an alias that can take the password for the next level and pass it through via sshpass which saves a good bit of typing. But I'm wondering if I can do the same for the connection address.

So far I turned this:

Apps missing from Ubuntu Software

I've just installed Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS, and when I went to install the browser Brave it told me "too early for operation, device not yet seeded or device model not acknowledged".

Having no idea what this meant I purged snapd, and reinstalled it. Now Brave along with many other apps (like Sublime) don't appear on Ubuntu Software. Apps like Libre Office are all present.

wayland login loop after moving $HOME to new SSD
cn flag

TR;DR I moved my home dir to a new SSD and manually changed owner to my user. Now I cannot log into wayland unless I log in to Xorg session first.

I moved my home directory to a new SSD using rsync -avz. Some apps were having issues accessing the configs, so I ran sudo chown USERNAME * on my home dir. This seemed to work but now I have a login loop on wayland.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
