gd flag

A newbie's here. Well, I'm having some trouble understanding the difference between:

let a=$a+$b
let i=$i+1

and:

a+=$b
i=$(($i + 1))

There's definitely a difference because the second expression ruined my script, giving a trash value.

Here is my script:

Currently when I try to install software-properties-common (via apt-get), I get the following errors:

4 Gb on a Dell Latitude e6530 Xubuntu 20.04 OK or better to have 12 or 16?
in flag

I don't code, game or do anything more resource intensive than watching videos online. Otherwise it's email, desktop publishing, Photoshop, Office, Telegram, Zoom (when I get it installed).

A friend told me before I bought the laptop that 4Gb RAM would be more than enough for Xubuntu. Have an opportunity to get 12 more Gb from eBay Seller for half price ($60). I suppose I could get 4 or 8 Gb more ...

Question about a Derivative that uses Ubuntu Repositories

Backstory: I'm using CUBIC to try to create my own derivative. Nothing that anyone will be interested in, just seeing how the process works (and I've definitely learned a few things about how the system is organized so far, so I'd call it a success. Mostly this "derivative" isnt' all that different from the stock ubuntu, but a lot of default packages are removed, a couple new packages have been added, a ...

Ubuntu 21.10, stock audio installation (not JACK). I'm trying to do a simple test to compare two microphones, and it's been extremely frustrating. The mics are both USB microphones.

Note that my microphone and playback work just fine for Zoom or Google Meetings, and my audio works fine for YouTube and other browser applications. Also audacious works fine to play back audio files.

Google Drive in Ubuntu with full local copy

From OneDrive (Windows) or GoogleDrive (Windows) I am used to much more than I currently have in Ubuntu.

The built-in GNOME Online Accounts is not what I want. I've also tried other clients but all do not copy the whole Workspace locally, rather access every file in the cloud, just through the filesystem.

I want a Full local copy and only synchronization to the cloud.

Upgrading a server vs fresh install
ru flag

I have an old VM which some years ago I upgraded from Ubuntu 14 LTS to 16. Now I've upgraded it to 18. My question is, can I assume that this installation is almost 100% identical to a freshly installed Ubuntu 18 LTS regarding the distribution, kernel, configurations etc?

In other words, should I be upgrading servers or should I be rebuilding fresh ones?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
