screens keep switching display port names/numbers – how to configure settings?
in flag

I have a notebook (Lenovo Thinkpad T14) running Ubuntu 21.10 (and another similar one running Ubuntu 20.4) with Xfce4 (aka XUbuntu) and a Thinkpad USB-C docking station, to which I've connected two external screens. I'm using one of them in a vertical direction, the other one horizontally, in addition to the Notebook screen.

Unfortunately, each time I start the system (and occasionally also when  ...

How can I set a custom icon for firefox running through firejail? (not only for the launcher but also for the running app itself)
ua flag

My specs: Ubuntu 20.04.3 with Gnome Shell on Wayland. Notebook Acer Aspire 5 with AMD Ryzen 7 5700U.

For my work, I want to run Firefox through the sandboxing utility firejail. I created a custom *.desktop file to launch the "firejailed" firefox and placed it in ~/local/share/applications.

In the *.desktop file, I specified a custom icon (the blue Firefox icon that is used for the nightly builds) an ...

How can I make Ubuntu detect secondary graphics cards?
cn flag

Ubuntu LTS 20.04

I'm running 3 graphics cards for 6 displays. Each GPU has 2 displays connected to it. Primary is an Nvidia GTX 1070, secondaries are cheap old AMD cards. For a long time, everything was automatically detected and this worked perfectly.

But a software update that required a reboot yesterday seems to have ruined everything.

Now, during boot, all 6 displays show the ubuntu splash screen

Kernel parameter to prioritize VGA over GPU output
bo flag

I have a Supermicro server with a display attached to the Nvidia GPU HDMI output, but I am working remotely with IPMI connection. So I need to boot Ubuntu with the output going to VGA, or else the IPMI remote console is just black. I figured out how to do this in grub, by setting terminal_output vga_text so now I see the grub menu on the IPMI console. But as soon as it starts booting linux my scre ...

Blender crashing while dealing with complicated tasks
us flag

I have used Blender 3.0.0 both from the default software repository and even from flathub and both versions crash when I import relatively complicated meshes and high resolution textures (e.g. https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/pile-of-dirt-c86a4e9d981d4f029cc9261fde52cb7c). This model crashes my program when I try to view it with textures and even though it may be complicated it definitely shouldn't c ...

What does dev mean in linux commands?
de flag

I have been experimenting with Linux recently and I've come across a dev argument in some commands when dealing with networks. E.g.:

  • ip link set dev wlan0 up/down

  • ip link set dev wlan0 address XXX

  • nmcli dev show wlan0

The ip link commands seem to work without the dev argument as well. For nmcli I think it lets the system know that I'm talking about a device, and I guess that it has a s ...

Automatically mapping multiple identical touchscreens
cn flag

I need to automate touchscreen mapping. In xinput, the names are the same. So mapping by name is unrealistic. also in xinput, the ID's are subject to change depending on what is plugged into the system's USB ports. So there is no reliable mapping by ID.

A great solution would be if there is any way to change the names of one of these devices, so they were unique

NBFC - Notebook Fan Control
cn flag

I want to make fan run at full speed. NBFS is working in my laptop, and I can change speed. The only thing I need is the settings to make it run always on full speed. HP ProBook 6550b.xml file is working in my HP EliteBook 8440p.

The main issue is that, as soon as the fan speed reaches the target speed (100% in this case), the figures stuck there, but the fan speed become very low. I believe it i ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
