Connect to FTP server with a specific username via the file browser
ru flag

I'm having a bit of trouble with ubuntu 18.04 . I want to connect to a remote ftp folder using the UI. I managed to get it to work for one location by clicking on 'Other locations' and entering the FTP address at the bottom where it says 'Connect to server'. The problem is, now that I have connected once, the username and password seem to be cached. I need to be able to connect to this FTP folder as dif ...

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 on my laptop (hardware specifications: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU, Nvidia 3070).

After reboot, The system freezes during the bootup screen. But the System is ready and the network is ready too.

My question is why can't I enter the desktop environment — not even the virtual consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1-F7) But I can ping the system IP which is given by the DHCP server.

How do I lock my computer and keep the screen black?
bt flag

I use my Ubuntu machine as a media computer, sometimes I lock it and walk away which normally blacks the screen and then after a few seconds stops sending signal to the monitor/TV. When the screen is fully black, my TV turns off the backlights and is for my purposes off. However, when there is no signal, I instead get the TV's "no signal" prompt, which turns on the backlight.

Possible weakness in www-data Permission?

today I was testing something on my VPS and realized the "www-data" user has read access into Home folders and into System internal folders as well which would give an possible Attacker, the ability to gather Information outside of the /var/www directory e.g. RSA_Keys or batch Files in Home Directory's.

Command 'java' not found on WSL, even though 'java' command works in Powershell
ae flag

This topic probably is a common one, but when looking online I didn't see much that related to my case, since I'm not running a normal ubuntu, but rather WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux).

So my problem is that I switched from java 8 to java 17 recently (I required java 8 for a course), but I noticed that on ubuntu terminals, java -version still showed openjdk-1.8.(something), rather than jdk-17 o ...

Accidentally rebooted PC before emergency remount was done when performing REISUB
cn flag

I accidentally did Alt+SysRq+B (reboot) before Alt+SysRq+U (emergency remount read-only) had completed.

My PC seems to work fine and running fsck on my partitions reports no error, so I'm thinking that no damage was done.

Is there still something I should look out for?

GlusterFS Mount
us flag

I am using glusterfs version 9.2 and seem to be having the issue where a mounted glusterfs volume randomly unmounts. I have done some googling and it seems where a couple others have had the same issue and it seems the general advice was to update glusterfs due to bugs, however that was for older versions and I am using version 9.2 as stated. Can anyone kindly help or advice me on this issue?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
