From some point, suddenly (I guess after an Ubuntu update?), it starts in the root directory when I open a new terminal. I want to start from my home directory as before.

The below is my shell script(I removed all the comments). I am running Ubuntu on WSL2 on Windows 10

export ZSH="/home/myubuntu/.oh-my-zsh"
ZSH_THEME="bira"
DISABLE_LS_COLORS="true"

Wayland dragging with middle mouse button down doesn't work as expected
kr flag

I don't know if this is a bug being tracked somewhere.

On Ubuntu 21.10 Wayland, attempting to drag with the middle mouse button down will not register at all.

I ran xev to see what events were being generated, and it seems to generate a LeaveNotify event as soon as I press MMB, then EnterNotify, ButtonPress, and ButtonRelease when I release MMB.

What's going on? NOTE: MMB = middle mouse button

UFW is inactive but traffic is still blocked
ru flag

on my Ubuntu 20.04 LTS desktop, i have the UFW firewall disabled (status inactive). I'm running bitcoin core application which listens on port 8333. Though the UFW is inactive, I cannot connect to this port when I run connection tests from other computers on the same network using telnet command. I've tried enabling and then disabling the UFW in hopes that may reset things but no luck. I've even tr ...

Ubuntu packages will not upgrade
dj flag

I keep getting this error everytime I try to upgrade my packages. All of them update except these 2):

I've tried getting into the GRUB menu to fix it but I can't seem to find out how. (SHIFT while restarting does'nt seem to work.) When I look up the packages it has something to do with Wine. (Maybe I installed the wrong binaries) I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.3

lightdm trying to use non-existent external display
bo flag

I'm having problems logging in to my X session and/or resuming from a suspend.

Starting about 6 months ago, I started having issues with my desktop manager, lightdm (though I've tried others like gdm3 and get the same behavior).

The problem would begin occurring after I used an external monitor. It seems that instead of having the greeter screen displayed on my laptop, it would try to use the non-ex ...

New Ubuntu kernel is causing a black scree, whereas the older kernel doesn't
eg flag

I restarted Ubuntu to be faced with the black screen of death, after some trial and error I found out that the older Kernel (5.11.0-27-generic) worked perfectly fine, but whenever I would turn on my pc and boot the default Ubuntu choice, I would be met with the newer version (5.11.0-43-generic).

I've tried using all of the versions of nomodeset and I'm pretty stuck. I'll try as much as I can to f ...

Receive SMS/Alert when specified text detected in a log file
in flag

I've been searching for a service for Linux that monitors logs for a certain text string and if that string matches, it sends a notification, ideally by SMS.

If the log text file contains "SPECIFIED TEXT", it calls this API...

A Telegram bot could also work...

Regardless if this service is paid or not, SMS would be preferred.

Thank you!

bitcoin:// URI handling
in flag

I run bitcoin-qt all the time, so I set the browser to handle bitcoin:// URI with bitcoin-qt. Unfortunately that causes a new instance to be started, which fails coz it fails to get a lock on the database.

What's the best way to do this?

I have 'server=1' to enable json-rpc access to bitcoin-qt.

Do I need to set the browser to handle these links with another app (say bitcoin-cli) which talks to bit-qt  ...

Update caused network icon to disappear and wifi connection lost - How can I debug this?
cn flag

The updates window popped up and I agreed to update the computer. After the upgrade it prompted me to restart my computer so I did. When I logged back in to my user I notice I have no internet. And the network icon is missing from the top right corner.

How can I fix this? I guess the update disabled my network adapter somehow, and the network manager is crashing on boot or something because of it ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
