How do I get an external GPU with a hybrid laptop to output a display on Kubuntu?
cn flag

I link the Arch Wiki a few times. I am using Kubuntu 21.10. It has directions, but I am not using Arch.

So... I have a strange configuration. I have a laptop with an Intel CPU, with Intel 360 graphics. I also have an NVIDIA GTX 10XX mobile GPU built into the laptop. I installed the drivers, and it works. I have an external NVIDIA GPU (connected via Thunderbolt). I followed these directions to get i ...

Nemo/Nautilus - Where does the list of 'other applications' reside?
gf flag

I'm using Ubuntu 21.10 with Nemo as my default file manager (because I like the split screen)

I was trying to change a default application to set Edrawmax to open .eddx files. If I go to Nemo or Nautilus | Properties of the file | Open with and browse through the list of applications I see this:

Note the two entries for edrawmax. They were not there the first time I tried this, I had to type 'edra ...

just upgraded to 21.10 button 10 on my m705 mouse won't send super any more. Will work for other commands
in flag

I had button 10 (the thumb button) bound to "xdotool key Super_L" previously on Ubuntu. Worked great, would pull up the Activities screen just like Super_L does. Since upgrading to 21.10 it won't work. I can bind it to something like xterm, or xbindkeys_show, 'xdotool key control+shift_q' (which also does a xbindkeys_show), and those all work great.

If I type xdotool key 'Super_L' at the commmand ...

How do I stop the GUI (in Kubuntu 21.10)
cn flag

I need to stop the GUI and access a TTY for the NVIDIA drivers. I found this question. However, when I tried sudo service lightdm stop (or the same with gdm), it said this:

$ sudo service lightdm stop
Failed to stop lightdm.service: Unit lightdm.service not loaded.
$ sudo service gdm stop
Failed to stop gdm.service: Unit gdm.service not loaded.

I'd prefer not have to mess with Grub, as I only need  ...

How to sort files with a certain permission by size?
cn flag

I need to sort all my files with 644 permissions by size.

So far I've tried using the ls command to find and sort but they don't seem right. I think it may need a grep command but I think it needs to show numbers like 644 not rwx. I don't know how to do that in a simple way since its my first time using Linux and the terminal in general.

Suspend with only s2idle
bt flag

I have a HP Spectre x360 14-ea0838no which does not do suspend.

I tried the tricks in this post: Ubuntu 18.04 - Dell XPS13 9370 no longer suspends on lid close But I'm not on a Dell.

I found out that I can do this command:

echo freeze > /sys/power/state

Then it actually does a kind of suspend. It is not deep, but at least it is turning of things.

Question, how do I make closing of the lid do this ...

Some Emacs's keybindings Don't work on Ubuntu 20.04
jp flag

Some of my many Emacs 27.5's customized keybindings do not work when I work with Ubuntu 20.04 on a Lenovo ThinkPad T15g Gen 1 with a US keyboard.

Most keybindings work, but some like super-o or super-p, Meta-! don't. When I type them on Gnome's terminal outside of Emacs, the cursor blinks. Or if I am on the navigation bar and I type them, the bar blinks. But nothing ever happens.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
