Fresh install, log in loop, unable to get a console
vn flag

I've looked at several other posts on here, this one (Can't log in to Ubuntu 19.10, freezes upon Ctrl+Alt+F3) is closest to what I'm experiencing but none of the answers/comments have solved my issue.

This is a brand new install of ubuntu 20.04. The install went fine up until I got prompted to remove my usb and reboot to complete the install.

When the machine rebooted the splash page loaded and I  ...

Which music proram am I hearing?
us flag

I'm running Kubuntu 20.04. I seem to have accidentally started one of the music programs, but how do I stop it? It doesn't show up in any window. I could run ps, I suppose, but I doubt if I could interpret its output.

Alt Gr key no longer a level 3 shift ater upgrating to 21.10
to flag

I recently upgraded to 21.10. During upgrade the system asked me which key I wanted to use for latin character input. I answered Alt Gr. However I’m an Icelandic keyboard user and use that key for a third level shift. E.g. to type @ I used to be able to type Alt Gr + Q. Now I’m not longer able to, it just types q. In fact pressing Alt Gr seems to switch over to the English keyboard. I don’t want t ...

How can I install GNOME LaTeX on Ubuntu 21.10?
ng flag

LaTeXila, now GNOME LaTeX, is my favorite LaTeX editor on GNOME, but unfortunately its package on Ubuntu/Debian is outdated: it provides LaTeXila 3.22.0 instead of GNOME LaTeX 3.38.

A problem with dependencies, apparently now solved, seems to be the reason for that: New upstream version 3.28 (#910573)

Is there a way to install the latest version of GNOME LaTeX on Ubuntu? What are the step-by-step inst ...

I have read numerous ways of moving a large file from one drive to another, but none of them address the issue I am having. This could be a post for a VirtualBox forum and I will post there as well and share the answer that works with the other forum.

Can't get past BIOS after Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS Server Install
us flag

I've installed Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS server on a 3TB HDD using a USB. The install appears to go fine but when it finishes and I restart the computer, it goes straight to the ASUS BIOS. I've disabled secure boot and played around with the CSM settings but nothing will let me get past the BIOS. I plugged in the old 1TB HDD with windows 10 on it and it boots no problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

21.10: "Updates Available" on metered network connections
bd flag

When my phone is tethered and shares its internet connection, that network configuration has a checked checkbox that indicates it has limited data and can incur costs, and that no automatic updates will happen on it.

Despite this the apparently unavoidable "updates are available" window pops up, asking me if I don't want to download 3.3 MB of updates after all...

Let's pretend that I don't believe i ...

How to start my own script at the END of boot

I am trying to run my own python script at startup. Or more specifically at the END of the boot sequence The python code does

a) writes to the I2C LCD screen

b) announces via sound that its 'Ready' When tested in a normal session this all works.

I tried, and suceeded, in creating a systemd service for this. The issue is that it runs too early - the screen is written to but the sound does not play. My g ...

duplicate os x night shift settings exactly/approximately for linux/ubuntu night light
cn flag

Is there anyway to replicate exactly the mac os x "night shift" temperature settings for night light/redshift? Fiddled a lot with the temperature bar, but never comes close to the appearance of mac os x night shift.

Night light always looks very red no matter what temperature. I would like to know if it's possible to exactly replicate the night shift settings in linux/ubuntu.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
