Ubuntu Desktop or Server ISO on USB key
my flag

I intend to create a bootable USB key that would launch a Windows application, running under Wine, on an Ubuntu distribution. The Windows application will be started automatically after system load and will takeover the user interface. For short, this USB construction is just to launch this application and the implementation is mostly playing with the automatic execution of scripts. As the only interfac ...

I originally installed Ubuntu 14ish years ago and it's been a pretty stable box, I have kept up with distro upgrades and from about v19 on up i've noticed a performance and stability hit. currently 21.04 GN ...

Install of ubuntu 20.10 fails to boot
de flag

Default install of Ubuntu fails to boot ("No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed"). I tried different hard drives to be sure.

"Boot device: UEFI : Kingston... " shows up in my Bios start device selector, but it does not start.

I used "boot-repair" to try to fix the boot, but it fails too.

Boot-repair diagnostic (https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/mjYJjshHzb/) mentions "Please disable BIOS- ...

Can't access encrypted drive
cn flag

I just bought a new SSD. I installed the new SSD in my laptop and installed Ubuntu Desktop 21.10. The old SSD is encrypted and has 20.04 LTS. I put the old SSD into an external enclosure and tried to access the files on it. The old SSD is recognized and a dialogue box opens up and asks for the password, which I put in, but I still can't access the files. "Files" shows a 1.6 GB drive, but if I look in "o ...

Recommended way to limit CPU usage of a shell script
cn flag

On Ubuntu 20.04 I'm using the AWS CLI to send backup data from my web server to S3. While the script works, it consumes CPU usage to the point where other services begin to fail. This becomes a big problem when a website isn't accessible for up to 1hr while the script sends data.

Is there a recommended way to limit CPU usage of a shell script? The largest backup file is just under 70gigs, so wh ...

No entry for user 'passwd'
in flag

I got a chicken and egg thing going on. My username isn't in the sudoers file and I can't set a password for my root to edit files when it returns No entry password for the user 'passwd'. It's weird that it regards 'passwd' as user.

As of now I can't do a simple command such as sudo apt update since the username isn't in sudoers file and I can't enter root to edit the file.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
