Why does list of sessions types change when I switch user
cn flag

When I log in with an user I have the following list

  • Gnome
  • Gnome classique
  • Ubuntu

But if I switch user, I have this list

  • Gnome
  • Gnome classique
  • Gnome on Wayland
  • Ubuntu
  • Ubuntu On Wayland

Whereas I have disabled wayland in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf

The main issue is, with the second list it opens a wayland session (even if I don't select
a line that finish with "On Wayland") and it freezes my system ( ...

How to make a gedit plugin in python that makes you write always on the same height (Ubuntu 20.04)
gb flag

I was thinking about a plugin for gedit that will keep me on one height all the time, for example when I hit enter, whole document scrolls down by 1 line. And I am here to ask if there is already existing plugin that does it, or how could I make one. I was already at official gedit site for making plugins in python but I don't really understand how to do what I want. Also, I was searching for plugin like  ...

Why is my alias from .bashrc not working?
pl flag

I've written a line in .bashrc

alias untar='sudo tar –xvzf'

Now, when I use "untar" in bash I get the error:

untar filename.tar.gz

tar: invalid option -- ''
Try 'tar --help' or 'tar --usage' for more information.

However when I use the actual command instead of the alias

sudo tar –xvzf filename.tar.gz

It works fine.

I did run . ~/.bashrc, so the alias is "known" (or however you'd call it). ...

Where has the network-manager service in 21.10 gone?
cn flag

Before upgrading I could use sudo service network-manager restart when having connection issues. After upgrading to 21.10 the network-manager is still installed, but not as a service anymore. Restarting the "networking" service instead seems not to have the same effects (and didn't had before in 20.04).

How do I restart the network-manager in 21.10?

VirtualBox VM not running through proxychains

I would like to route all my VM traffic through a proxy using proxychains. However when I run the command

proxychains virtualbox

and virtualbox starts up and then I start my VM, the VM traffic doesn't go through the proxy. What gives? Is there another software that I can use that will route all traffic through a proxy, like there is proxifier for Windows?

Ctrl button switches keyboard layout after upgrading to Ubuntu 21.10
cn flag

I've upgraded my Ubuntu 21.04 to 21.10. I remember responding that I want to use Control to switch languages. But then I realised that it's not very convenient. The problem is that I can't turn it off. Keyboard configuration is showing that the switch layout shortcut is different (Command + Space). Where can I fix it?

ubuntu 21.04 on Acer Aspire 5: acpi misinformation

I was happy to get Ubuntu running on my Aspire 5, having been warned here and elsewhere that only a very recent Ubuntu version would work.

One thing remains "less than perfect": acpi does not meaningfully report any temperatures. On other systems/environments I get CPU temp, ambient temp, perhaps even more, but here I get no more than

    acpi -t

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
