Can't escape back to mac OSX bigsur after Ubuntu Mate dualboot install
cn flag

Last night, I decided to tinker with installing Ubuntu Mate 21.04 on my 2015 Macbook Air. I am totally blind, and am very interested in Orca developments with Google Chrome. I did some looking, and some instructions told me to install the refind boot manager. Not knowing how accessible the OSX recovery menus would be, I decide to go ahead and install the Ubuntu system, and install refind from there, sin ...

New 20.04 install hangs on re-boot
ua flag

I have two new 20.04.3 installs (Ubuntu-MATE) on a newly built desktop workstation. One is on a 2.5-inch SSD, the other on an nvme SSD.

If I do a "Restart" from either, it appears as if a restart will happen, but it just hangs.

The computer does not restart, does not shut down, it just goes black, and I have to press the reset button.

The same thing happens if I make any change in the UEFI/BIOS settings ...

quirks in Lubuntu

I need to edit loader.conf in Lubuntu but find / -name loader.conf doesn't return anything.

The file I'm looking for is supposed to be inside of /boot/loader but this folder doesn't exist.

The point is setting what is call a "quirk" as a kernel option.

NOTE: On some baytrail intel atom laptops, sound simply doesn't work and you have to pass snd_soc_sst_bytcr_rt5640.quirk=0x502f30 as a kernel option (fro ...

Weird Samba username mapping

I have a very weird problem with Samba and username map. The mapping file is like this:

username map = /etc/samba/users.map

Contents of /etc/samba/users.map:

master = johndoe user2 user3
regular = johndoe user5 user6
restricted = johndoe user8 user9

The problem is that Samba always maps johndoe to the last local user listed in /etc/samba/users.map file. In the example above, johndoe will always be ma ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
