What is enabling mariadb on first boot
lk flag

A bit of background on what I'm trying to do: We are building an Ubuntu image that we deploy to thousands of workstations. We need to have MariaDB available on the workstations, but we only want it started when needed, to not negatively affect the boot time on machines that it is not needed.

So my plan was to do a systemctl disable mariadb.service when we build the image, and then start it via an agent  ...

PCI Soundcard support
ye flag

I'm trying to set a PC to learn Ubuntu-Studio (release 18). I'm using an old PCI soundcard: Guillemot Fortissimo I. Expecting to use MIDI I/O to connect to my piano keyboard. Testing with live CD, seems that my soundcard is recognized but NOT the MIDI part.

Is there any additional driver I should install or configure ? Which command could I use to check the MIDI ?

Thank you.

Plugged in ext4 to Windows, how to recover the data in Ubuntu?
in flag

I moved all my data to a new drive and it seems to be lost. Please help me to recover the data.

Here is what I did to make the problem occur:
I moved, not copied the data. (First mistake) The HDD was making noises when I moved the data. Since the drive is new and the SMART values all looked good, I didn't worry too much about it, but maybe I should have?
To use the data I plugged in the drive into a Wi ...

How to make a portable Ubuntu server

It can be useful to have an Ubuntu Server in an SSD connected via USB or in a fast USB pendrive and run it in different computers. The wired network system of Ubuntu Desktop and the community flavours works [without tweaks] in different computers, but the Ubuntu Server seems dedicated to the computer, where it was installed.

ubuntu every keystroke leads to power-off message

I did a fresh install of ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I am running into an odd issue. Every keystroke, no matter where and what key, is giving the power off message, "Power Off. The system will power off automatically in 60 seconds". I have to click "cancel" to resume normal usage. I couldn't find anything googling it.

Ubuntu had my trash recovered after reinstalling
ec flag

So I removed Ubuntu from my computer and installed Windows 11. I didn't empty my trash before I removed ubuntu.

After that, I reinstalled Ubuntu, but, the trash had items in it?! I open the trash and saw my files that I trashed on my past installation of Ubuntu.

Can somebody explain to me how this works, please?

Upgrading a Raspberry Pi from a deprecated version?

I've got a raspberry pi that's running 19.10. On trying to install a new package today, I discovered that this version is deprecated. How can I upgrade this to 20.04 LTS?

I've tried changing the ports.ubuntu.com URLs in sources.list to old-releases.ubuntu.com but this doesn't seem to change anything. apt update says this:

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
