Ubuntu in a industrial environment - increasing robustness
cn flag

I'm trying to figure out ways our company can make their industrial computers running Ubuntu more robust. We use industrial computers in vehicles which run (at the moment) Ubuntu 18.04 (Desktop Version). We use 18.04 because our software is built with ROS Melodic, only runs on 18.04 and we heavily depend on Docker Containers for modularization of our software. An upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 is possible. connection closed unexpectedly (ubuntu 20.04 tigervnc server, win10 RealVnc client)
za flag

On my arm64 computer (Ubuntu 20.04) I was using tightvnc until this morning.

I found when I resize the window it often gets stuck and disconnected.

I've seen this previously so I remembered I can use tigervnc (in the past I switched to vnc4server, but my other Ubuntu 20.04 machine is using tigervnc so I decided to change to that).

I removed tightvnc and installed tigervnc.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on my machine, but come up with a very strange issue, every time I am clicking on the Poweroff button, instead of shutting it down, it just restarting the machine.

I tried to find some forums on this but didn't get any firm answer on this.

Please help me with this, how can I solve this issue?

Unreadable console text when booting Ubuntu Live USB

Nyx

While booting up Ubuntu Live USB I get my screen covered in these unreadable lines of what I guess is text of some kind, viewable in the linked image. Things are fine again when landing in the GUI environment. However, I don't want to use the GUI version. I created a USB with the Server LTS version instead, and it's the same thing there, but now totally unusable. Help!? =S

I set up a VPN using my FritzBox 7530. I have Machine A connected to this router and Machine B outside the network. Once the VPN is active I get a DHCP address for Machine B in the same subnet of Machine A, and this is great.

I can access via SSH from both machines, using SFTP and so on. The only drawback is I have to use the IP address. The hostname is not recognized from both ends.

Problem with multiple monitors and workspaces
ma flag

Maybe you have an idea how to fix a problem I have.

I have 2 monitors.

When hitting windows/super key I see all open windows on current workspace.

This works well for the right hand monitor.

However, on the left hand monitor I see all open windows independent of the workspace.

Do you have any idea what this might be?

What is package selection states of debian packages?
co flag

If you try to invoke man page of dpkg, you will see two states about debian packages like me which are Package states and Package selection states.

As far as I understand based on the man page, it seems that the packages are selected by something which is going to install, hold, deinstall or purge each of them.

My question is what is this something? How can we benefit from knowing these selection stat ...

I'm using Ubuntu 21.04. The Ctrl+- keyboard shortcut for zooming out doesn't work in any app (Terminal, browser, etc). The Ctrl++ and Ctrl+0 shortcuts work fine, and I can zoom out by clicking the menu buttons with a mouse, and those menu buttons have a label that says Ctrl+-. A new install of Ubuntu Hippo, restored the media files to "Videos" and made that a shared folder. I was able to see and play these files on my network-conected TV when I was running 20.4 and its versions of Rygel and GStreamer. Today I have 180 files all titled 'English'.

I have a file called space.txt. I am doing the string match with ath2. I need to insert a string "newdata" after 12 spaces. I tried the below command, which works, but used manual white 12 spaces. How it can be achieved in another way?

sed -e "/ath2/a\ newdata" space.txt

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
