How to make Chrome browser "Save as" dialog to be on focus when opening under Ubuntu 21.04?
ng flag

I use Ubuntu 21.04 and bumped exactly in the issue that seem to be solved long ago... under 14.04 version. But now it's back. I use Chrome 94.0.4606.61(Official Build)and when open "Save as..." dialog, I'd rather prefer to just hit Enter button to confirm my choice. Instead it's not on focus, so I have to move my cursor to the Save button and press it, since no hotkeys let me focus this dialog ...

Not able to install any software on Ubuntu

I tried to install MatLAB in the directory

/usr/local/MATLAB/R2018a/bin

and add this path to .bashrc.
After this, I was able to launch Matlab by just typing Matlab in bash.

But now, when I try to install any other package using apt package manager, I get an error and this message pops up in the terminal.

When I press the OK button, it asked me to enter the location where Matlab is installed.
So I en ...

I just installed Quixel and Nuke, how can I create an alias for them in Ubuntu?

I just installed Quixel Bridge and Nuke. They are not found in the application list so I have no way to drag them to desktop favorite. Nor did they like Google Chrome that could be started in terminal by typing google-chrome. I could not figure out how to edit ~/.bashrc to create an alias.

I tried

alias quixel="/usr/local/Bridge.AppImage"

and I put the above line into the ~/.bashrc file, but it  ...

Kubuntu 21.04 no longer loading in VirtualBox?
cn flag

Let me start by saying I'm a novice at Linux and a total noob with VirtualBox. I installed Kubuntu 21.04, everything was running great for a few weeks, except the screen size would always boot to something tiny (like 800x600). So every time I loaded it, I'd have to open up konsole and enter

How can I make text in dialog windows selectable (for copying)?

Well, I mean more all windows rather than just dialog windows, but I can't think of a better term to start pointing in the direction of what I mean.

To be more concrete:

kdialog --title 'title' --inputbox 'I want to be able to select this text for copying' # eg with qt

Show progress or time elapsed when erasing disk with hdparm
ng flag

I'm erasing a bunch of disks using hdparm with the following commands:

wipefs -a /dev/sdX
hdparm --user-master u --security-set-pass asdf /dev/sdX
time hdparm --user-master u --security-erase asdf /dev/sdX

Is there a way to view the current progress on the erase command? Even just a timer that shows the current time elapsed would help, since hdparm -I gives an ETA on how long it would take.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
