crop webcam output
mz flag

I am using Ubuntu 20.04.3. I have a USB webcam. I can control various aspects of the webcam output using v4l2-ctl e.g.

v4l2-ctl --set-ctrl focus_auto=1,white_balance_temperature_auto=1,backlight_compensation=1,brightness=64

What I would like to be able to do is crop the webcam output for use in online meetings (it currently shows too much background). But none of the parameters returned by v4l2-ctl -l

How can I tell if Ubuntu has booted securely?

I understand that I can reboot, enter the UEFI firmware (formerly BIOS) settings and look for options enabling UEFI boot and forcing secure boot. However, given an already booted system (e.g., a server I do not wish to reboot), how would I tell if Ubuntu has booted securely?

I am aware of another question asking about EFI boot, which I found useful. I have also read the article about how Ubuntu impleme ...

I have a RDX Drive (USB Intern) for backups on the Server. When the backups are done the Server does a restart. It then mounts the RDX Drive. I can get the Cartridge out by pushing and holding the Eject Button until the Cartridge comes out. But there must be a way to disable this. I have set dconf-editor so that the auto mount is disabled for all users and that works, RDX Drive does not automount when I ...

I want to change ownership, group membership and access rights in a script by a sequence of commands.

Some of them need root permissions.

I first did sudo su in a terminal and then ran all the necessary commands once in a row. I found out that after sudo su all macro definitions abc=<...> have to be put after sudo su, because it seems that root does not know about macros existing in the othe ...

I want to restrict a user to run a command only two times in Ubuntu.

Specifically, I have created a custom command through an alias which needs to be executed only two times by every user.

My custom command is

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
