Ubuntu server: The list of available updates is more than a week old
cn flag

When I log into my Ubuntu server via SSH, a "Welcome" text is displayed. This text used to contain information about packages avilable for update.

Since some time, always the text "The list of available updates is more than a week old." is displayed instead.

Of course, I regularly check for updates with "sudo apt update". This has no effect on the text on the "Welcome" screen.

Does anybody what's wrong ...

Has Ubuntu stopped publishing OVAL files for EOL releases, or are they archived somewhere but still accessible?

Here is the official Ubuntu information about OVAL data: https://ubuntu.com/security/oval

It is increasingly important to include OVAL definitions for SCAP scanners that find and remediate vulnerabilities in EOL distros. One might say that OVAL is most useful for identifying unpatched software ...

Lenovo T490 shut down and will not boot into Ubuntu without using grub2 bootloader from USB
id flag

There is a boot loader issue for many Lenovo laptops. I do not know why. Specifically this laptop was stuck trying to PXE boot as seen by many IT professionals.

After messing around a bit, I created a bootable USB and loaded the boot loader on my T490's memory from the stick. It then gives me the option to "boot from next volume" and by selecting this I am able to actually load the Ubuntu OS into memory ...

Raspberry Pi 400 - Ubuntu 21.04 appears to have broken 2 microSD cards
gb flag

Briefly - tried flashing the 21.04 RPi 400 Desktop image to a 128GB microSD card with the stock Pi Imager on macOS last week. Installed ok, and worked for two reboots, upon which I saw a terminal message on startup telling me the microSD needed a manual fsck running. Did that, but no progress - subsequent restarts took me to the manual fsck message again.

OK, I thought - I’ll reflash the SD. Ho ...

My goal is to write a command to locate a file called MABLE on my server. Then I need to craft this command to report no permission errors, but print out every other error.

Currently, I'm using

find / -name MABLE

After that, I'm putting in

ls -d mable

This is not working. Any better way write the command?

Gnome shell extension update: ERROR
fr flag

Ubuntu 21.04, Xorg, gnome-shell 3.28.4.

I occasionally get a message that this-or-that Gnome shell extension should be updated. (Latest: Lock Keys). Trying to update the extension invariably leads to the ubiquitous red "ERROR" message on the extension list (and a defunct extension). The solution is always to restart X (Alt+F2, r), then everything works again (until the next update is signalled).  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
