How do I troubleshoot desktop crashes on 21.04?
au flag

I am bumping into desktop crashes (called login loop by many) on Ubuntu 21.04.

This started happening after an interrupted sudo apt install... session which had run 70 (very low bandwidth) hours before power outage.

Upon power restoration, I reran apt thinking the machine would be very out-of-sorts. Notably, apt proceeded based, I'm guessing, on its cache. It ran for additional time, then gave me a r ...

Why is installing ZFS as a root filesystem no longer an option

On the page of the installer where it would ask you what kind of installation you wanted there used to be a button labeled 'advanced' where you could install with LVM or ZFS. That is gone now.

I am curios how this happens? I came in from the weekend and had to reboot two unrelated servers, exhibiting the same similar message:

/dev/sda1: Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found.

What happened to pamusb-tools and libpam-usb in Ubuntu 20.04?

I'm looking into how to make one of my usbs a security key and I found a guide to do so inside Linux here: https://bytevarsity.com/how-to-make-a-usb-security-key/

Two packages that the guide says to install (pamusb-tools & libpam-usb) are nowhere to be found when searching for them. I found previous questions where someone asked the same/similar question in 16.04 (Ubuntu 16.04 Unable to locate  ...

How to use pagination in BusyBox when ‘more’ is dysfunctional?
za flag

So I’m dropped in Busybox and need to do some work here (no pools, datasets and encrypted root) but more isn’t working properly.

I need to go through the config files but I have access to a few degraded commands and fail to set pagination.

I am not very confident with those tools, never been there that long

Thank you

I have four external usb3 hard drives connected via a usb3 hub to my Ubuntu 20.04 server. Hardware is an intel core i7-6700T with 8GB ram.

Drives are mounted using fstab and this command:

Having an issue where any or all of the four drives will randomly disconnect from the mount points and become unavailable.

Can we have multiple path/directories for fonts in linux?

Is there anyway to have multiple directories for loading fonts in Linux distros? Or loading the fonts from a directory inside .fonts such as .fonts/DIRECTORY?

I have two sets of fonts, and I don't want to mix them in .fonts directory.

Full Disk Encryption that is FIPS certified
de flag

I am having to setup FDE that is FIPS140-2 Certified on 18.04 and 20.04. So far I have not found a solution that is FIPS140-2 certified.

There is no ISO that comes FIPS140-2 certified with the FIPS packages installed. So without FIPS packages, any disk encryption would be using the non-certified FIPS modules even after FIPS modules are enabled, from my understanding.

Emergency mode : what can I do after running fsck?

Hardware : MSI GL73-8RD Software : Dual-boot windows 10 & Ubuntu 20.04

After manually shutting down Windows during an update (might or might not be related, but it is the only trigger I can think of), I wasn't able to boot into Ubuntu. Is there a way to have Evolution use the system notifications?

I don't use Evolution directly but I do connect my calendar to the desktop via my google account. Evolution still seems to use the old-school popup notification when an event is about to happen.

I like being notified of upcoming meetings but would prefer to have those integrated with everything else instead of popping up in the middle of my session and stealing focus. Any thoughts on how to achieve this? ...

Bootable USB is not persistent, reinstalls from scratch every time I boot

Please forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I'm very new to Ubuntu.

I want to make a USB stick that I can put into any PC, boot up into Ubuntu, do whatever I need, then power down and have the OS state and my settings and files saved on the USB. That way, next time I boot from the USB, it will go straight into Ubuntu, with all my files, settings, etc preserved from the previous session.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
