Ubuntu is crashing after long read/write operation
md flag

I have a dualboot pc (windows 10 primary, ubuntu 21.04 secondary). Windows 10 works fine, but ubuntu crashes when I have long read/write operations. One day I was running a memory check (third party) on ubuntu and it crashes again. Most likely, it's the problem of the operating system itself. How can I fix this? Tech specs are below-

SCP/RSYNC don't work in Crontab but work when run standalone
cn flag

I need to copy a backup file to a backup server everyday. I am using PublicKey SSH authentication.

All of the things work but not together:

If I run this line in crontab

rsync /home/ubuntu/*date_backup.archive* ssh [email protected]/home/centos/backup

This works and sends the backup correctly

But since the date in the filename of the .archive changes, I need to run a script. Then I create rsync_backup.sh ...

Logitech G305 wireless mouse is randomly lagging on Ubuntu 20.10
om flag

So, I seem to be having the same issues as other people have, but I cannot seem to fix the issue. I am dual booting on my machine, so I know for a fact that my mouse works as it never stutters in Windows. As I mentioned in the title, my mouse lags at random times on a newly installed system. If I use my old mouse that is not wireless it never lags.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I can test ...

Script to share WIFI over Ethernet between Ubuntu Servers 20.04?
us flag

Question

Is there a generic script that shares Wi-Fi over Ethernet from an Ubuntu Server to another (that doesn't have a Wi-Fi card)? I saw this question (and this, and this) solves it for the version with GUI using mouse clicks, and I thought I could prevent re-inventing the wheel if an equivalent script already exists.

Server-side (CLI-working)

Different default programs for viewing and editing files?
cn flag

Wouldn't it be nice if, say, when selecting a file in nautilus (or any other any file manager), hitting enter would open it with a primary default application, while hitting shift+enter would open it with a secondary default application (perhaps defaulted to the primary)?

This way, one could assign a file extension to two different programs, one for viewing and one for editing. Think of how usefu ...

Hello everyone!

I tried to upgrade my Pop!_OS to the recent version 21.04, but the update progress got stuck without me noticing and thus I shut it down with the process still pending.
After booting it up again I noticed that I couldn't install or update anything and so, inexperienced as I am, I followed the suggested command, which also removed many essential packages like pop-desktop, pop-session

How do I change the color of text on terminals?

For some reason, I've lost all the colors on the terminal and all the text is in white as per the link below

So just that the location and username is in different color and I could tell them apart. Even in the image, ls -l showed everything ...

Can't change scrollbar color in a GTK3 theme without messing with it
my flag

I use GoldBars as my GTK3 theme. Differently from the screenshots, at least for Firefox 89, the vanilla, gray scrollbar is displayed, although other elements of the theme are clearly in effect.

I would like to color the scrollbar's trough. Something that works on other themes is to put this in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css:

.scrollbar.trough,
scrollbar trough {

Is there some robust way how to tell that ie, SSH, os login, login command, su user, sudo su user have triggered some NSS module?

I would like to know in the same way as in PAM we have ie. PAM_TYPE="auth" and PAM_SERVICE="sshd"

Until now I found only ENV variables ie. "_" : su and SUDO_COMMAND : "/bin/login user1

Problem is that with SSH, env variables are cleaned. With OS login I can see that env i ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
