KDE applications in standard Ubuntu 20.04 do not support accents
nr flag

KDE applications like KWordQuiz do not recognize accents in Portuguese typed by the combination of two keys (like é, ã, ó) using either US International Keyboard or ABNT. The accent characters (', ~, `) do not even show up when their keys are pressed twice. This works well, on the other hand, with Gnome applications.

Dumping Windows 10

I'm not very PC literate and am sick to death of Windows 10!

So I'm asking for a bit of advice. I own a HPlaptop 14s-dq0xxx, Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU 5405U, with 4GB RAM.

Is there a version of Ubuntu that someone with very limited knowledge of all things computer programming (that would be me) can install into the laptop and retain full functioning of screen, sound, wifi, and anything else you can th ...

USB3 HD fails to connect on Ubuntu

Although my 2Tb USB3 HD connects to my L520 Lenovo laptop fine as USB2 on Windows, and I've successfully saved a small test file on it with Windows, it completely fails on my Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS 64-bit Gnome 3.36.8. I've also tried it on Ubuntu 21.04 in LIVE DVD mode and it equally fails there.

Since it connects OK on my laptop's same USB ports on Windows, I think that rules out the obvious first  ...

Hello Ubuntu Community,

I am running a Dual Boot system with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04 on an x570 Tomahawk MSI mobo (with built in wifi 6 through Intel AX200). For the last 6 months, there were no problems with the Intel AX200 Wifi card on both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04. However, recently, during a Zoom video call on Ubuntu 20.04, the nm-applet disappeared abruptly - cutting off internet acce ...

Errors on Ubuntu 20.04 update
in flag

I ran a regular update of my Ubuntu 20.04 PC this morning and the following dialog popped up:

software updater broken

Per the instruction I ran:

sudo apt-get install -f

And it appears there were more errors.

I'm still pretty new to Linux, so this is beyond my capacity to deal with.

Some snap application menus don't display properly in 20.04.2 LTS with MATE 1.24.0

Some menus do not display properly in 20.04 with MATE 1.24.0 (example below) - even within the same program some display properly others don't - is not affected by whether the app displays in dark mode like system default or does its own default color - it's not affected by changing the theme either - I think it appeared with an update to 20.04 LTS but I am not 100% sure as it only happens in some menus ...

I recently installed Virtual Box running Ubunto. I'm on Mac, running the latest OS.

However, once I log in, my screen flashes white, especially when I move the mouse cursor around.

From Googling, it looks like people are switching to Ubuntu XOrg (I'm new to this so I'm not sure what this means) to fix this.

However I'm not seeing an option for this when trying to login (see below image). I just see Ubu ...

Ubuntu partition disappeared after laptop ran out of battery

I've been unable to boot on the ubuntu 20.04 partition after my laptop shut down because it ran out of battery.

After I plugged the PC again, it booted straight into the Windows partition installed on the same NVME drive and I realised my UEFI parameters were resetted, and date and time were not correct any more. I suspect the BIOS battery, which I changed last year, might be dead again.

Linux headers for kernel 5.4.20

The uname -r outputs 5.4.20-stb-exy+ . I cannot find any relevant ubuntu package for it. If the headers do not exist anywhere, is it possible somehow to compile them and how?

In XFCE panel, is there any way to distinguish terminals that are waiting for input from ones that are running a process?
us flag

I might not have the terminology perfect.

In my XFCE panel on Ubuntu Studio 20.04 I have a "Window Buttons" area, much like a Taskbar in MS Windows.

The visual real estate quickly gets used up by terminals - because whatever one tries to do in a GUI there is always a terminal command needed at some point.

I'd find it useful to make the open terminals that have the $ prompt up and are waiting for a comm ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
