I have a Dell Precision 5750, CalDigit TS3+, and Ubuntu 21.04. I have a widescreen Samsung monitor plugged into the Caldigit via DisplayPort. This combination works fine on various other OS's using the same hardware (Garuda, Arch, Windows). On Ubuntu 21.04, sometimes, when the laptop goes to sleep, or I restart it, parts of the CalDigit seem to no longer be working. The monitor still works, but the C ...

How do I get my USB HD to be detected after SW update?

This is Ubuntu 21.04 on a System76 Ratel Pro. Today, I took a software update that involved kernel modules (and required adm password). When I tried to restart as instructed, the restart hung until I unplugged my USB backup drive, at which point the system came up immediately. Now when I plug the drive into (any) USB socket, it is not detected (does not show up on the desktop nor in /media/david). When  ...

21.04: multi-monitor breaks on every screen timeout

Every time my displays sleep, it comes back thinking there is only one monitor. xrandr --auto fixes it, as well as going to Settings -> Displays -> Join Displays.

Note that my system is set to not suspend... this is just the monitor blanking kicking in.

Reset password or reinstall Ubuntu without access to the bios

I've had 20.04 on my old computer, that died, so I just bought a new computer. It has Nvidia hardware and had Windows 10. Of course I wanted to install Ubuntu, and instead of the LTS I chose the 21.04. It was not a dual boot, by the way. Installation went great, but then the password doesn't work.

I'd like to reset the password or even to reinstall Ubuntu as I still have the usb drive, but the co ...

PCIe readout performance depending on kernel

I have a PCIe (Gen3) device that transfers data to the computer RAM in chunks of 256 MiB, each copy taking about 48 ms. I am using Ubuntu 20.04 and a kernel device module to handle the data transfer. Whenever I upgrade to a newer kernel, I recompile the driver.

I recently noticed that with image 5.8.0-53, the readout was consistent, and taking about 48ms (+/- 0.2 ms). After upgrading to 5.8.0-55  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
