How can I "isolate" GRUB from one distro to another on a multi-boot setup?
cn flag

I have a triple boot setup with KDE Neon Unstable (we'll call this the primary since that's the one I use the most so far), Ubuntu MATE development release, & Windows 10 on a laptop (thanks to 500GB + 1TB SSDs I can add a few more in the future).

How can I "isolate" GRUB of a non-primary distro (installed on the partition where the distro is installed), and have a "master" GRUB from the prima ...

Misbehaviour while moving desktop icons on 20.04.2 (GNOME 3.36.8)
vn flag

Every time I move an item on the desktop into a subfolder it reorders all icons on the desktop. Also newly created folders or files are placed at a random position rather than where I right clicked. Also I can select multiple items but not move them. All of this is very annoying and confusing.

How do I fix this? I already tried digging in the dconf editor but wasn't able to find any settings for  ...

I connected my old monitor Philips 223V5 to my new PC with Ubuntu using VGA-HDMI adapter. It loaded with bad resolution. I couldn't change it in the settings, because there was only one available option 1024x768 (4:3). I googled some methods.

Firstly, using xrandr.

Alacritty command line doesnt work as intended after editing Alacritty config file

I've added config customization to Alacritty by adding this to my path and editing. I have spent the last 3 hours or so editing to a point where I am happy, however I have somehow introduced a behavior change that was unintentional and unwanted.

When typing at the command line, if I hit the <backspace> button, instead of deleting a character, the cursor skips forward 2 or 3 characters. Also, if I hi ...

I'm looking for a system-wide equalizer to improve the sound from a laptop which is running the latest version of Linux. PulseAudio EQ and PulseEffect keeps coming up, however I've seen that it's no longer supported and can even causes problems.

So is there any alternative? Something that is hopefully easy to use?

How to do the X11 forwarding over SSH with a private network (10.x range IP address) generated by a QEMU emulated OS (Raspbian) on my Ubuntu 21.04 X64

I'm running the raspbian os armhf emulated with qemu on my jetson nano arm64. It works decently expect for the fact that this architecture can generate only an orthogonal network configuration with a private IP address due to the limitations of the raspberry 3b that has no PCI bus and no virtio devices can be attached to it. This is how I have configured qemu to run it :

Kernel Modules Created by DKMS Show "Exec format error" (after update to Ubuntu 21.04)
in flag

Hi I'm in a weird situation. The update to Hirsute seemed just fine until I plugged my Dockingstation in the Laptop and noticed that I wouldn't be able to use my external monitors. Narrowing down the cause led me to DKMS failing to produce modules for my kernel, as also the NVidia drivers and VirtualBox were not usable anymore.

What I found out is that GCC and BinUtils on the system should match  ...

What are the risks to update 18.04.5 kernel (5.4.0-74) to the latest 5.4.125 to match the PREEMP_RT patch?

Good day everyone!

I see that uname -r returns 5.4.0-74 in my 18.04.5

I don't see any version like this at kernel.org. Why the dash? I hear that Ubuntu makes changes to their kernel. This suggests going to get source on kernel.org and building would break things?

I want to install the PREEMPT-RT patch and change only this setting to avoid breaking things. I assume the patch has to be the same version a ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
