How to change window atributtes in Wayland?
in flag

I want to write an script that sets the attributes of certain windows to 'always in top'.

This command is supposed to work on X11: wmctrl -r "window title" -b add, above

But it does not work on Ubuntu 21.10 running Wayland. Neither does this one wmctrl -l work. I found a way to list active windows in here, but still can't change the attributes.

I've been fighting for quite a while with my wifi connection. Basically, the problem is that it disconnects, but doesn't reconnects automatically. Instead, an applet prompts me to reconnect, this happens every 10'.

I thought the problem would be Network Manager, so I connected using Networkd, but I couldn't just get it working just by starting the service, because the wifi card has to be  ...

Is there a keyboard shortcut to switch the focus between monitors in GNOME on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS? I do not want to have to move the cursor between monitors, or Alt-Tab to the window on the other monitor.

Alternatively, I would be fine with a solution that assigns the first workspace to the secondary monitor, so that I can simply switch to the first workspace in order to switch to the secondary moni ...

Where is located mysqlpump log file in Linux/Ubuntu
hu flag

I am neither a DB administrator, nor a DevOps but I need to migrate a very large table (~500M rows) from one MySQL schema to another. For doing so, I use mysqlpumpbackup tool. Also, since the DB is an AWS DB, I establish an SSH connection to the Ubuntu server from terminal and then run the command from command line.

Everything works as needed and I can see the process being output on my terminal, but on ...

Is it recommended to change root directory permission to improve security?

I have a computer running Ubuntu 20.04 Server. I bought my server in Digital Ocean 1 year ago (more or less) and every month I try to improve its security and I'm getting affortunnelly. But about user organization I always have doubts.

This is a personal server, so really I'm asking to improve my understanding, for future projects that might involve more users.

My root directory permissions are:

Is large swap appropriate for infrequent, high memory task?
it flag

Hypothetical: I have a workstation with 32 GB RAM which is perfectly fine for most tasks. However, I rarely (1-2 times/year) need to perform a task that is very, very memory intensive (i.e. 150 GB Memory needed). Its fine for this to take a long time since its infrequent. Would it be appropriate to buy a 1TB SSD and dedicate it to Swap instead of upgrading to 256 GB RAM given the price difference? Would ...

Nautilus encrypted file opens save dialog instead of prompting for password

In Ubuntu 18.04 I encrypted a LibreOffice file called 'test.odt' by right clicking and choosing the Encrypt option. I used the Shared Passphrase option rather than using a key. When I attempt to open the 'test.odt.pgp' file, either by double clicking or by right clicking and selecting the Open with Decrypt  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
