I'm looking to make a dedicated writing machine. Essentially what I want is a fullscreen text editor like focuswriter with dropbox running so I can sync my writing file with other computers.

I'm not a linux power user—I've gone down a few paths of trying to start with a terminal-based linux distro and add what I need, but I keep on hitting dead ends.

So, I have a dell latitude laptop, ubuntu (budg ...

Syncing mails from different folders in thunderbird

I'm now working as a research technician in an institute and I have an official institute mail for the official communications. The access to the mail will be discontinued this month as I'm leaving the current institution. However I have many important email exchanges in the inbox which I would like to keep. For this I wanted to create a local copy of my mailbox including all attachments. For this I log ...

inodes become overwritten, fsck required many reboots on Ubuntu Server (ProxMox)

rld

I'm using a 4TB WD Red (WD40EFAX) HDD for the main storage on my ProxMox instance, which runs a few Ubuntu Server 20.04.3 VMs.

After writing anywhere from 5-500GB of data to this drive, eventually a Ubuntu Server VM will crash and upon reboot require an fsck to repair inodes. Every time this happens, fsck will do it's passes and report lots of overwritten inodes, then clone and repair things. Drive is c ...

creating an offline mirror from download.docker.com
de flag

I have created an offline apt repo with the following command

debmirror -p -v --method https --passive -d focal,focal-security,focal-updates,focal-backports -a i386,amd64 --ignore-release-gpg .

I then copied this to my offline environment and was able to then use this as my deb repo.
However I need as well as this the download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu focal stable. so usually I could just add this  ...

for reasons that I cannot seem to divine, my postfix keeps trying to deliver messages to root to root@[MyISP].com, which of course is getting rejected as invalid username by the SMTP gateway at [MyISP].com. I cannot seem to figure out where its getting this root@MyISP.com address from. I have a .forward file in /root/, and other stuff that uses mail command seems to get delivered properly. How do I make pulseaudio or pipewire auto-detect newly plugged in audio devices?
mx flag

I've been having some issues with my audio devices on Ubuntu 20.04.03 LTS. If headphones are plugged in before booting, it is recognized by the system and works fine. However, if I plug in a new device (it's the same problem whether it's plugged in on front or back ports) while my PC is on, it doesn't get recognized automatically. In order to use it, I have to restart pulseaudio (or pipewire which I've  ...

ad block of 100 IPs at once to Ubuntu 20.04.3

I need to add 100+ IPs to a single interface, which is trivial to accomplish on other versions of Linux in one single line. How do I accomplish the same with Netplan or, if not even possible, with standard Debian networking ifupdown. And if the case is that Netplan can not do this, which is the canonical procedure to replace Netplan?

I'd like to make the ncdu NCurses Disk Usage tool analyze a path, display the output, and exit, for scripting purposes. Normally it is a human-interactive tool, but I'd like to remove the human-interactive part of it.

If I run ncdu /boot I can see my /boot partition. Here is what I see:

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
