Ubuntu Core 20 cannot start after install due to needing a recovery key
gq flag

I'm trying to install UC20 on an Optiplex 7040 Micro. It's set up in UEFI Secure Boot mode, the disk is completely clean, the TPM is clear. I'm able to get as far as applying the image to my disk, booting, and installing — which all ostensibly go fine. It's able to put keys away, encrypt everything, etc etc. However, without fail, after it reboots post install it demands a recovery key for the drive i ...

rsync pattern to include all files of specific patterns and exclude the rest, from all subdirectory tree

I mean to rsync some files of a subdirectory tree at dir1.

I am using

[dir1]$ rsync --itemize-changes --recursive --update --times --include-from="rsync_include.dat" --exclude="*" --dry-run ./ remote:~/dir1/

The rules are as follow, in this order.

  1. Include subdirs dir11 and dir12 at level 1.
  2. Exclude the rest at level 1.
  3. Within dir11 and dir12, include all files *.cc, *.txt in the subtrees.

How do you reassign a positional argument so that it is available outside of the function?
us flag

I'm trying to create a #!/bin/sh compatible string_split function that has a similar command syntax to the read command so that you can pass in the string you want to split and the variables you want to assign the strings too.

This is the function I've come up with, but I can't figure out how to make the new values available outside of the function like the read command can.

External Hard Drives become unusable after resume from suspend

I have an ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING, using Ubuntu 21.10, kernel 5.13.0-27-generic.

I've got two different external USB drives, one is a 2tb sandisk extreme portable, and the other is a LaCie Rugged Raid Pro 4tb.

Both of them become unusable after a resume from suspend. They'll work for a moment, and then they will get input/output errors. dmesg will show "aborted ext-4 journal detected".

The application works fine, but I usually run excel on my second monitor.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
