Restarted Ubuntu and now none of my USB ports are working
in flag

I really am baffled as to what is happening. I simply restarted my PC because it was being a little slow, and now that it has restarted, I am stuck on the login screen without Mouse or Keybaord functionality. I have tried several other keyboards as well as different ports on the machine and nothing changes.

Since it's an RGB keyboard, I can even see it light up during initial boot, but before the ...

Unable to get vino-server working in Ubuntu 20.04, vncserver works

Joe

I am able to get vncserver displaying, but it doesn't show the same desktop as Ubuntu driving a monitor. The only reason I tried vncserver was because I've used it before, but I'd like to use the recommended installed vnc server that comes with Ubuntu.

This is what works, I am using tightvnc client on a mac.

vncserver :1 -geometry 1280x800 -depth 16 -pixelformat rgb565

Certbot fails using nginx under XUbuntu
kr flag

Following instructions from https://medium.com/@jasonrigden/how-to-host-a-static-website-with-nginx-8b2dd0c5b301, I instead installed python3-certbot-nginx instead of python-certbot-nginx. Is that correct? I got this error: Timeout during connect (likely firewall problem). I've got port forwarding on my router to the appropriate computer for ports 80 & 8080, and I've got ufw showing for nginx Full, ...

Is there a way to save/backup packages previously obtained using apt install from a now dead repository?
fk flag

A while back I installed a TV server program called Tvheadend using a PPA. The installation instructions and the program were on the site tvheadend.org which now appears to be dead (as of about three days ago, it seems). One of my pet peeves about installing software using apt is that you don't get a compressed installation file that you can hang onto for future use, like you would in Windows or MacOS. ...

Trying to upgrade but getting certificate error due to Jenkins

I am upgrading an old 16.04 LTS machine (yes, I know I'm stupid for waiting this long when it is EOL)

It seems to be a problem with Jenkins and/or its repositories

Can't Unlock disk nvme0n1p3_crypt 20.4
za flag

First off I'm dumb as it gets with computers

Installed 20.4. using a bootable USB. Set ssd as install path for Ubuntu. Full encryption. I don't think in the installation process I entered a encryption passcode. Only security keys, which dont work for 'nvme0n1p3_crypt'disk code.

I also get this trying boot in recovery mode (Linux 5.11.0-46- generic & 5.11.0-27- generic versions)

How can I start another startx within desktop?

I want to start another startx within user desktop. It should be possible via Xvfb, Xnest, Xvnc... But how?

For example:

 xhost +
 Xvfb :1 -screen 0 1280x800x16 &
 x11vnc -display :1 -clip 1280x800 &
 vncviewer -shared localhost

From within another terminal:

 export DISPLAY=:1
 startx &

only gives me a black screen with a blinking cursor.

Why does the KDE lock screen appear in Regolith Desktop when installed alongside Kubuntu?
cn flag

I recently installed Regolith Desktop to use alongside Kubuntu Desktop. I have fully disabled screen locking in Kubuntu, such that my display just goes to sleep without needing a password to resume.

However, when I am using Regolith and my screen goes to sleep and I wake it up, I get a KDE-branded lock screen dialog and have to enter my password. Because the screen unlocker has a KDE logo, I assu ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
