Audio driver mapped wrongly to Nvidia causing no audio input ubuntu 20.04
br flag

Current kernel is 5.15.10 (custom build, cannot downgrade as my laptop has very new hardware, lower kernels do not support some drivers for them). Sound chip is Realtek ACL287. Somehow the system does not show any audio input and output, after doing the following:

sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio
mv ~/.config/pulse ~/.config/new_pulse_conf

How to repair Ubuntu after messing up permissions on critical directories?
cn flag

So I ran a stupid command as root (DO NOT RUN THIS)

# chown -R root:root /{usr,lib,var,etc,bin,sbin,tools}

So... oops. I happened to have a root shell open (from when I caused this), so I was able to get sudo working by doing

# chown root:root /usr/bin/sudo
# chmod 4755 /usr/bin/sudo

Yay, sudo works again. I wanted to install a package (ncdu), so I ran sudo apt-get install ncdu.

Unable to boot after updates, or installing anything Kubuntu
sc flag

Suddenly after an update, I was unable to install anything or any updates.

I've tried to figure out what was causing it, I am not sure where the issue is but I would like to be able to install any updates.

After this issue happens I am able to go into the terminal by pressing alt+f2 and recently I found that I can get into the OS using the command startx but this is in some sort of limited graphics mode ...

nameserver goes missing from /etc/resolv.conf
ro flag

I have a problem where the line nameserver 8.8.8.8 just disappears from my /etc/resolv.conf.

This might happen every few days or so and I haven't noticed anything that would be linked to this issue. Then I add it back manually and restart my forever looping scripts. This is pretty annoying to do and I'd like to know why this happens.

Zoom gallery view doesn't update
ng flag

When using the gallery mode in zoom, the active speaker does not jump to the top of the gallery, so you constantly have to be navigating around to see the speaker. The zoom docs say there should be a "save" or in this case un-save gallery layout option, but i haven't found one. I've never seen this issue on macOS or Windows. Anyone else had this problem?

How to fix xorg rejecting my EDID data
cn flag

I have a Apple computer hooked up to a 2007 Apple Cinema HD Display with Apple's official mini display port (thunderbolt) to dual-link dvi cable and when I start up in Ubuntu 20.04.3 only the half size (1280x800) display resolution is available.

I can add the higher resolution (2560x1600) using xrandr and I can make it persistent with my .xprofile.

I am curious why xorg is throwing out the modeline  ...

How to rename workspaces on Ubuntu 20.04
lu flag

I decided today to use workspaces on Ubuntu 20.04. I see that every workspace I create is named: Workspace 1, Workspace 2, etc.

Is there a way to rename that to meaningful names such as Study, Video, etc.?

P.S: Searching on Google doesn't return any useful results.

What is the official Debian/Ubuntu way to install new configuration files in user directories?
ph flag

I'm creating a package which includes some default settings for users. Things that generally appear under ~/.<some-name> or ~/.config/<app>/<some>.conf and similar files.

In most cases, these files are installed in the skeleton directory (/etc/skel) but those are going to be installed only in new users home directories. I'd like existing users to also get the files at the time th ...

Can I use an alterative port for syslog if 514 is already taken?
ve flag

I'm looking to send our Load Balancer's logs to a syslog server. We already have an existing Ubuntu 20.04 syslog server and would like to use this rather than request to stand up a new server. However, it's already receiving syslog from another client on port 514.

I was checking around and I get conflicting info that I cannot use a different port and some says that I can. The load balancer doc I was  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
