I have been using Unity for a long time but decided it was time to give another envornment a try. I installed KDE Plasma on my machine and kept LightDM as my display manager. Logged in using KDE to play around and everything was fine.

decision process around adding packages to ubuntu repos
cn flag

Is there documentation on the decision making process for what gets included in "official" repos? I'm not trying to lobby to get my favorite package to be included and I know I can add external repos to get other software. I'm only interested in the criteria for including software that will be picked up with the "stock" /etc/apt/sources.list file.

Software must get added/removed over time. For example,  ...

Started netserver on remote machine, but netperf cannot make connection
at flag

I'm using two azure machines to run a TCP_STREAM test from netperf between them.

The remote machine is called mymachine-Standard-D8as-v4-premium-disk-west and the local one is called mymachine-Standard-D8as-v4-premium-disk.

I follow these steps:

  1. Start the netserver in the remote server at port 2333:

403 error on sudo apt-get update

For months I could not figure out why I couldn't update, so I just left it alone.

Then one day when I was installing Ubuntu desktop on my windows computer, I ran into the same problem. Both my linux and windows computer are connected to the internet through an ethernet chord. So the fact that I got the same error on my other computer made me think it was a IP issue. So I switched my connection (o ...

Problem in opening ".srt" (SubTitle) files in Nemo file manager
br flag

When I'm trying to open a .srt file, this will happen!

Before: Before

After: After

This doesn't happen in other file managers (nautilus and dolphin), ONLY in nemo! It happens for any type of .srt. But I can try Open With > and select proper software to open it. After some digging, I noticed something like this happened to text files too, I can't open them. Actually, I think or maybe other files have same situat ...

Clean Ubuntu Desktop install, Network is unreachable
fr flag

I am trying to install Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS on a PC (Motherboard: PRO Z690-A DDR4(MS-7D25), BIOS E7D25IMS.100). First of all, it has a NVIDIA graphics card so for now I can only access a console (I need to update packages to get everything to work, I think). In the terminal, I cannot update anything, because the Ethernet is not working.

Xubuntu - Suspend on Lock

After nearly a decade, I've decided to give XFCE a try with Xubuntu 21.10 on the ever-reliable ThinkPad X1. Just about everything has been remarkably painless to configure, but I cannot for the life of me get the system to suspend when the lock screen is active. Instead, the system remains active all night, though the screen is off. I wonder if I'm missing something.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
