I'm using Ubuntu 20.04, and several applications (Emacs, Firefox, Okular, Libre Office, OpenSCAD) all have buggy popup windows for opening and saving files. For example, when saving a file in Firefox using ctrl+s, the popup window where one specifies file name and location exhibits the following behaviour:

How to setup a 10Gbit/s network with Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro
tr flag

I installed a 10Gbit/s network card into my "ubuntu server 20.04" server today. But I'm not seeing the performance I would expect. The network card I installed is the asus xg-c100c, which is a base-t/ RJ45 network card.

I have a network connection, and yes it is connected to a 10Gbit/s capable device (Unifi Dream Machine Pro with SFP+ to RJ45 plug).

It also looks like the OS thinks there is a 10Gbit ...

Swappiness on WSL2 gets reset to 60
cn flag

I recently tried installing Ubuntu on Windows (WSL2). I tried the free command, and few blocks of swap memory were utilized. I thought of reducing the swappiness so I added the entry vm.swappiness=10 in /etc/sysctl.conf. I tried reloading sysctl.conf, and it seemed to work, But when I tried shutting down WSL and starting a fresh session, swappiness was reset to the default value of 60.

modprobe on my Ubuntu machine: invalid option -- 'l'

I was reading the modprobe manual: https://linux.die.net/man/8/modprobe

So I tried the -l flag on a few different Ubuntu machines: 18.04, 20.04.3

After getting:

modprobe: invalid option -- 'l'

I noticed that indeed "-l" is missing when running modprobe -h.

If it helps, modprobe -V gives the following version number:

Can't use nvidia-smi with nvidia 495 driver Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

I encountered a problem while trying to install my GPU drivers.

I installed the 495 NVIDIA driver. Which was the recommended driver for Ubuntu.

Somehow, nvidia-smi doesn’t find the driver I installed. Yet, the driver is present when running DKMS status:

Logitech Mouse and Keyboard freezing on Ubuntu 20.04 with Dell XPS 15 9570

I have been using for a number of years without issue, but recently bought a Dell XPS 15 9570 that's driving me nuts because of an issue I am having with the Logitech mouse and keyboard that I use with it (both are connected through the same unifying receiver). I am intermittently having issues where both keyboard and mouse "freeze" for 1 - 6 seconds. The onboard keyboard and trackpad work fine at the ...

How to find the nouveau version used or installed into linux system (ubuntu v21.04)?

How to find the nouveau version used or installed into linux system (ubuntu v21.04)?

I read a lot information eg. here. However, none of the info found presenting the version of xorg / nouveau drivers. For an unknown reason, information is presenting only nvidia drivers version and not that of nouveau drivers.

So, what is the proper way to see what version of nouveau drivers are used by system?

I'm making a backup of an EXT4 system on an exfat partition. The EXT4 system has identical names with different cases, for instance Video, and VIDEO. Is there any way to find and identify all the possible conflicts?

Right now rsync first uploads one directory and then basically deletes all its contents (when using the --delete option)

Rob

To keep it short and sweet: just bought a 4tb disk to replace a broken one. Not sure to use a linux format a.i. ext4 or NTFS. I will mainly use the disk to store music and films and some (Win-)software and push them on external disks and USB sticks. My main OS is ubuntu 20.04.3LTS, no longer using Windhoos ;-).

Cheers, Rob

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
