Searching LibreOffice files in Ubuntu 20.04
cn flag

I've got a bunch of LibreOffice files and I'm trying to find the one that contains specific text. In GNOME 3.38.5, which comes with Ubuntu 20.04, I tried searching from the file manager making sure to to select "Full Text". But nothing comes up, even for text which I know is present. From this I deduce that either GNOME isn't capable of indexing or searching in various file types like some other syst ...

Cannot write long output to file

I'm a beginner. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04

I am trying to send the output from a command that installs dependencies for a subsequent install command.

I have tried:

$ my_command > output.txt
$ my_command >> output.txt
$ my_command | tee output.txt

I always just get the last, maybe, one hundred lines of output. I am loosing some lines of output because I watch them scroll by on the terminal. I  ...

Can I override the LVM volume group name using storage: layout in the autoinstaller?
cn flag

I have physical machines with multiple (n) hard-drives that I want to install identical copies of Ubuntu 20.04 on using the Automated Server Install. My hope was to just be able to use the LVM layout on each disk, to keep things as simple as possible.

My autoinstaller config uses the following,

storage:
  layout:
    name: lvm
    match:
      path: <DISK NAME E.G. /dev/sda>

Ubuntu 21.10 on RPi4, no network-config or user-data showing on SD - Why?
gh flag

I'm trying to run the latest Ubuntu on a headless pi. Therefore I'd have to update the network-config, but it's not showing on the SD. I tried re-burning a few times. Also tried ejecting and reconnecting the SD a few times.

Does anyone know what's up? Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Is it possible to restrict a regular expression to a given number of characters or perform two logically AND connected tests in one regex?
in flag

I have to split a table into columns.

The texts in two neighboring columns each match the expression (\S+\s+)+\s*. But sometimes, one column gets a bit larger than it should and then there is only one space at the end of the element in the 1st column such that the regex for the first column also catches the second one. The digits 1 and 2 in the example denote to which column the characters belong, there ...

starting ubuntu server 20.04 even with failed disks

I have an important ubuntu server.
The server has some very important software to run and some data disks.

The data disks are not critical. The server Running is. Espacially since I do not always have physical access and might need to do remote troubleshooting with ssh.

Recently I have a failed disk due to no unmount when the system went down:

I cannot listen to both Spotify and Zoom at the same time

My OS is Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS and it is fully updated via

I have a very strange issue, I have both Spotify and Zoom installed. Yet I can only listen to one at a time. If I begin listening to Spotify first, then Zoom tells me "your speaker is not working, please go to settings to try a different one" and will play no audio despite my microphone working.

Solving my Bluetooth in XFCE

There are really plenty of hacks to get systems to do Bluetooth right, I would like to get mine to work too, or use a default that works if anybody would indulge me.

Let's paint the picture.

  • two screens with "mini" internal speakers (Eizo)

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
