Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS on HPE Microserver Gen10plus does not boot after update
gb flag

I installed and configured Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS on a HPE Microserver Gen10 Plus last weekend. After completing the installer, it booted without issues. Some days ago I ran the available updates it prompted for. This morning it asked a reboot (*** System restart required ***) in the login message. I rebooted but it does not start anymore.

How to use .so files
pk flag

I recently downloaded a SDK (written in C) from a device distributor and try to compile the code. As I do so, the output is

/usr/bin/ld: FILE: undefined reference to 'FUNCTION'

I assume that some linking might fail because there are some .so-files in the SDK which need to be installed.

Does anyone how to fix this problem? I Use Ubuntu 20.04.2. I'm grateful to all kinds of help.

Clean Ubuntu Install hangs on bios logo
jp flag

I am experiencing an issue with a brand new Ubuntu install (kubuntu 20.04.03 LTS). I was able to successfully complete the installation of ubuntu, up until it asks me to restart the computer.

At this point after restarting, my PC would run through BIOS (I can still press F12, Del etc.), then go black as it boots Ubuntu. It will then simply display the Aorus logo and hang there. PC will not respon ...

Gnome Settings "Automatically Delete Temporary Files"
in flag

What does the setting "Automatically Delete Temporary Files" actually do? Two parts to this question: (1) what is meant by "automatically" ? Every day? Every login session? Every millisecond? (2) What is meant by "temporary files"? Are these the files in the /tmp directory? That seems to be cleaned every time I reboot, in spite of having this option in GNOME's Settings disabled.

Moving from Snaps to Apt (home desktop situation)
cn flag

While I understand that developers maintaining versions appreciate snap functionality, home users probably won't. People install Ubuntu for home use, as a replacement of other OSs, one of the reasons might be the low-resource demand. Since I installed Ubuntu 20.04, my disk (particularly root partition) is permanently full. The offending directory being /var/lib/snapd/snaps. I have already reduced snap r ...

How can I log in via ssh into a chroot
gb flag

I have a Synology NAS and was frustrated with the available packages. So I installed a Debian chroot (after a lot of googling, as I am just a normal user). This is great. Now I would like to work remotely with VS Code on some py files which reside inside the chroot. Until now I always had to connect via ssh to the NAS and then enter the chroot. Is there a way that I can connect via ssh directly to the c ...

What is the replacement tool for auth-client-config in 20.04

I am following the instructions to setup LDAP authentication for an Ubuntu Focal (20.04) client.

One of the steps is to execute the command sudo auth-client-config -t nss -p lac_ldap. Supposedly this utility is provided by the ldap-auth-client package. However it seems it was removed in Ubuntu Focal and later.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
