How to manage USB webcam image settings on guvcview? The "image control" options work fine with the built-in camera, but not with the USB one
gd flag

I use Ubuntu 18.04; I have a built-in camera in my computer (low resolution) and a USB webcam. The USB camera works fine; however, when I open guvcview, I can change the image settings (brightness, contrast, saturation etc) of the built-in camera in the 'image controls' section, and when I open the built-in camera in other application such as zoom or google meets the image settings are applied. I am trying to install Ubuntu from a Bootable drive on my SSD disk. I am getting the error "unable to write to iommu perf counter" before it even goes to the graphical view to install Ubuntu. I am using an AMD Ryzen 5 3550H processor and AMD integrated GPU. This problem seems to be coming from AMD GPU. I have Win 10 installed. Is there any way to resolve this issue?

Do I have to restart? The mouse pointer does not change at all when I go to the top where, if my memory serves me correctly, the cursor changes and I can drag the terminal window size down smaller.

Lenovo Legion 5 - Several problems while trying to use Ubuntu

I know that parts of this question were asked before, however, none of the questions featured all problems that I have encountered and the answers were rather unhelpful in my case. I tried to install Ubuntu on my Legion 5 17" with a 1660ti and a Ryzen 7 4800H. The problems I encountered were:

Ubuntu 20.04 Keyboard and main display disabled after connecting 2nd monitor (?)

Hello I have a strange problem I have not seen referenced anywhere else.

I have Ubuntu 20.04 (just updated, which thankfully recovered my 20.04 from an even worse state) and it works as expected except when I try to connect a 2nd monitor. Then the keyboard is not responsive and the original (laptop) display is disabled.

The strange thing is that I literally came home today, the laptop did not detect ...

Where to begin with using Linux

I do not know where to begin with installing/using Ubuntu. I am somewhat literate with Dos programming and use Win 10 Pro on my 17" Envy HP Laptop. Have not found anyone at the University who knows much about U so I am a babe in the woods at this juncture. In short, I am too ignorant to ask an intelligent question.

Accidentally added architecture 1386 instead of i386

When installing wine on my Ubuntu machine, I made a small typo when allowing for 32-bit and 64-bit systems. I accidentally typed sudo dpkg --add-architecture 1386 instead of i386.

Now, when I try to sudo apt-get update or install any new software, I eventually get (among others) two noticeable error messages. The first is:

GNOME GUI: Show Applications Button - Customizable Alternative?
ar flag

On the dock in Ubuntu, there is a button that says says "show applications" when you hover over it.

Show Applications Button

I noticed that there is a similar version of that on Macos, and it's called "Launchpad." I would like to customize my "Show Applications" screen, but it doesn't seem very customizable. Are there any apps that act as an alternative to this? Thanks.

How to troubleshoot CPU HW crash in Ubuntu 18.04
cn flag

I bought a new computer a few months ago. I installed Ubuntu 18.04 and it's working fine except when I compile c++ code: it freezes hard as soon as there is a spike of high CPU usage (10+ cores).

The only working workaround is to compile with -j8. Going -j10 or above will make the system crash most of the time. -j16 crashes 100% of the time with big projects (and no ccache).

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
