Install a package/service under a different name
cn flag

I want to install a specific old version of MySQL, but I also want to keep my 'current' MySQL from APT.

I've downloaded the .deb file for the old version from the MySQL archive. My understanding is that I can install it with the following:

sudo apt install ./mysql-5.6.10-debian6.0-x86_64.deb

I understand that this will expose the mysql client command by placing it into /usr/bin or similar, and e ...

initrd.img doesn't point to the newly (and newer) installed kernel
ru flag

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04.

I was on 5.8.16-050816-generic, this kernel version was installed by downloading from Ubuntu's mainline.

Just recently, I manually build kernel 5.14.0-next-20210913+ grabbed from upstream linux-next tree. I did update initrd, and grub. But one thing I notice and curious. Why initrd.img still points to the old kernel version, but vmlinuz points to the newest one. See below.

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Nvidia drivers stop working after a couple of reboots. Intel or AMD
ma flag

This has been happening for over a year.

I have two systems, both running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. One system is Intel I7 and the other is Ryzen 5. One card is GTX1060 and the other is RTX2060. The only point of similarity that I can think of is the version of Ubuntu 18.04.

I have never upgraded.

After a couple of reboots the drivers seem to fail. I have blacklisted nouveau in both systems ages ago. No matter ...

Help - Possible Bad Drive?

Okay, first let me preface this with an apology. I was persuaded to set up my Plex server in Ubuntu because it would be 'easy and lightweight'. However, my knowledge of Linux commands in general could barely fill a thimble (I have trouble installing or unpacking .tar files - or whatever it is you do with them - and am heavily reliant on the GUI). That being said, if I can recover the data, I will move i ...

Ubuntu 20.04.2 Temporary Failure in name resolution
es flag

About 2 weeks ago my VM became unreachable from the Internet - I can't access it via ssh, I can't access the files stored on it but I can ping it. I have KVM VNC Setup for it so I logged on and I tried to ping google.com but it resulted in the Temporary failure in name resolution error. However, it is successfully able to ping IPs directly such as the 1.1.1.1 DNS Server and any public IP.

gmusicbrowser -cmd ShowHide doesn't open on top of windows when using a custom shortcut
cn flag

When I run gmusicbrowser -cmd ShowHide from the terminal gmusicbrowser opens on top of all windows. When I run it from a custom shortcut, it opens under windows.

Fundamentally I would like to have gmusicbrowser display in front of all other windows when running gmusicbrowser -cmd ShowHide via a keyboard shortcut, as it does when running directly from the terminal.

Why is mv so slow - local disk to local disk?
st flag

I'm moving a single large file from /mnt/z to /mnt/y on a bare metal Ubuntu 20.04.3 install.

Both disks are capable of sustaining 2 GB/s in writes, and do in other operations, but mv caps out at ~200 MiB/s.

The disks are PCIe 4.0 Highpoint RAID cards with either U2 or M2 drives in RAID 0. Both with NTFS partitions.

is there some way to tell the window manager to block all input to any new window, or any kind of popup dialog for a few seconds?

(This is not about web browsing), this is about:

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
