Getting S/PDIF sound out of emu10k1 on 20.04
ph flag

Have moved from 14.04 where sound was working to 20.04 on new hardware. Comparing the 2 desktop machines alsa_base is identical. Differences are the old working machine has an integrated sound chip running at 44.1 kHz. New machine uses emu10k1 chip running at 48 kHz with the snd_emu10k1 driver. No digital stream is recognized by the powered speakers that do the DAC but spec's say 48KHZ is OK, anything u ...

Why do I have 2 network addresses for one interface?
de flag

I logged onto my home server through SSH today and noticed that I now had 2 local addresses for the same Ethernet interface, enp5s0:

IPv4 address for docker0: 172.17.0.1

IPv4 address for enp5s0: 192.168.0.49

On my router, I assigned the server the static address 192.168.0.49, and today I've noticed that it now has a second address, 192.168.0.85, how could this ha ...

brightness control with ddcci and gnome slider

I have connected an external touch to my mini pc. DDCCI module seems to work for me.

eg

echo 90 > /sys/class/backlight/ddcci5/brightness

results in a change of brightness. But unfortunately I cannot use the slider. The slider still controls intel_backlight. How can I change the slider to ddcci5? Is there a way to suppress the intel device to be populated during startup? acpi_brightness=none didn't  ...

Supported hardware list 2021?
be flag

I'm having trouble finding an up to date (well, actually finding any working) supported hardware lists. It seems that "Linux Friendly", "Component Catalog", and "Hardware4Linux" are all defunct. Surely there's some way to get an idea about the chances of a device working other than buying it, trying it, and having to send it back if not? Amazon's real forgiving of that, of course, but it takes a lot of  ...

Sometimes I get a black screen
jp flag

On Ubuntu 20.04 sometimes when I get out of sleep I have just a black screen. I might get it also just when I get out of the lockout. The login page does not appear I just have a black screen.

I use 2 screens, the first one is a laptop screen reversed and an external monitor which is the primary one.

So I think that it's a GDM issue. Where to check what bugs? Is there any log file?

Why do my NVIDIA drivers stop supporting OpenCL a few days after reinstalling?

For the longest time, I could not get NVIDIA OpenCL or CUDA to work on my Optimus enabled laptop. I finally got it working by purging all nvidia packages with sudo apt-get --purge remove '*nvidia*' and reinstalling the driver metapackage with sudo apt install nvidia-driver-470 then rebooting.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
